Interesting how the top teeth have been cutting into the bottom jaw, that thing looks prehistoric or even alien to me.

I think so was sent to me from a friend in the Congo.

they are a relative of the piranaha.. Very angry looking fish.

The TIger Fish!! My South african friend up the road tells me these fellas are very similar in fight to large Barra and prefer to stay high in the water table generally and love going Aerial! Not known for long or prolonged runs but let the line slacken and they are goooooooooooone.

Many moons ago there was talk of the Nile Perch being introduced into Australian waters

Imagine a 200 - 400 ld fish on the end of your line which fought like a Barra

It was said the nile perch would thive in our waters but concern about what devastation it would've caused the local fishery halted the import

Thanks for the welcome ruckus, My friend Ian has caught hundreds over the years however released every one except the last which he had Taxidermied as he was coming to Oz permanently so I can only assume that they may not be so good to eat. Having said that the Mozambique waters they used to fish are on par with PNG etc so good eating fish are more than plentiful. I will aske Ian to sent me a few pics of the beasts, I found this 36kg specimen on the net though. Yeah Jumpus, this bugger would take your head off!

You probably know this Jumpus but the nile perch is very closely linked genetically to the barra, in fact for many years until DNA profiling they were known by no less than 4 scientific names before settling on Lates Niloticus, the main difference between the 2 is size only.

The Nile perch (Lates niloticus) is a species of freshwater fish in family Centropomidae of order Perciformes. It is widespread throughout much of the Afrotropic ecozone, being native to the Lake Chad, Congo, Nile, Senegal, Volta, Lake Turkana and other river basins. It also occurs in the brackish waters of Lake Maryut in Egypt. Originally described as Labrus niloticus, among the marine wrasses, the species has also been referred to as Centropomus niloticus. Common names include African snook , Victoria perch (a misleading trade name, as the species is not native to Lake Victoria), and a large number of local names in various African languages.

Lates niloticus is silver in colour with a blue tinge. It has a distinctive dark black eye, with a bright yellow outer ring. One of the largest freshwater fish, it reaches a maximum length of nearly two metres (more than six feet), weighing up to 200 kg (440 lb).

Adult Nile perch occupy all habitats of a lake with sufficient oxygen concentrations, while juveniles are restricted to shallow or nearshore environments. A fierce predator that dominates its surroundings, the Nile perch feeds on fish (including its own species), crustaceans, and insects; the juveniles also feed on zooplankton.

Nile perch have been introduced to many other lakes in Africa, including Lake Victoria (see below) and the artificial Lake Nasser. The IUCN's (World Conservation Union) Invasive Species Specialist Group considers Lates niloticus one of the world's 100 worst invasive species. The state of Queensland in Australia got heavy fines for anyone who possess living Nile perch in the state, since it's competing with the native fish Barramundi which is similar but don't reach same size as the Nile perch.

The species is of great commercial importance as a food fish. The Nile perch is also popular with sport anglers as it attack artificial fishing lures and is also raised in aquaculture.

Like I said earlier recall many moons ago talk of the Nile Perch being released here & if I'm not mistaken recall that their growth rate is far quicker than the Barramonkey in other wiords just for the Ninkompoopies like that Googlefish who calls himself catchnrelease

The Nile Perch grows twice as quick as the barramundi which attracted attention to it over here as a viable commercial fish

This Fish shown is not actually an African Tiger fish, but a species of the same family known as the Giant Tiger Fish which grows much larger than a Tiger Fish.

Done the rounds that one, but judging by the title of the thread, i thought i was gonna see some cheezy poofs on a float going down OXford st! hehe.

Those are massive teeth considering the size of the fish.....Somebody should teach fish to brush their teeth...
