Cant afford it but I want a new sounder.. Will prob go sounder only not a combo as ive already got the navman with the charts that i got off frank, its charts are prob not as good as the new stuff..

Soo many options out there, the Laurence 7" would be nice, its a combo unit so I could get rid of my navman that way but i really like the gain knob on the furuno's.

Some of the new garmin stuff looks pretty flash too...

Just wondering peoples thoughts and what theyve used?

Here is a link for a Furuno 587 from the US... Which transducer should i get with it?

I think if you are going to use the boat a lot weekly/fortnightly or more the Furuno would be good, if like me these days you only use the boat rarely then a cheaper sounder would do.
I use Raymarine in the outside boat but use navman in the bass boat and am at the moment fitting a new cheap color sounder up on the front cast deck it's a Garmin 300c don't know how much it was as it was a promotion I got for nicks, and next week will be it's maiden run.
Feruno are great but if you can't afford it ( like you say ) get something cheaper.

What type of fishing and what depth?

The transducer is just as if not more important than the display.

The new lowrance units are pretty good but very hard to go passed furuno for deeper water.

I have a $200 cheapie in my boat and no real experience with many Sounders but used my uncles HDS 7 ? For a few years, was a pretty nice unit, can get em pretty cheap these days. I would get one but can't really justify it considering the boat only gets used once a month nowadays

I can see the writing on the wall, boat only gets used once a month these days!! girlfriend comes along and once a month becomes once every 3 months, relationship gathers momentum and boat only gets used a couple of times a year, marriage happens and we don't really need that boat any longer now do we !!!.

Perfect excuse to get a very good, easy to use sounder so you can make the most of the fishing opportunities you do get biggrin.gif

Haha nah mate I don't have a girlfriend, just having a hard time getting out cause I've been pretty busy working out my future and stuff. Had a good 10 day non stop fishing hoilday and ordering my Proline soon.

Actually, can you move Sounders between boats, like buy 2 cables/mountings/transducers ? Could just go halfs with dad and share between 2 boats

After spending the weekend sown at sussix, ive found that the current GPS and charts are out of date too. They are a C-MAP NT+ 2005 edition i got of frank and have served me well untill now when my mobile phone with navonics has better details..

So I have 2 options....

See if I can buy newer maps for my Navman 6500 and stick with it for plotting (other disadvantage is the zoon im isnt big enough making it hard to judge distances under 100m which makes it harder to find the edge of a reef)

OR

Buy a new Combo Unit instead of just the Furuno 587
- Either The Furuno Combo or look at the HDS 7... Any tips on what the furuno combos are like??

OR

Buy the 587, Stick with my sounder, and buy a cheap tablet (10") and put navonics on it and use it like a plotter as well...

Buy a piece of string & go find a good rock
Tie string to the rock
Tie a knot every meter on the string, this will give you depth readings

Since ewe suck @ fishing laugh.gif
Ue rock as a hurling device throw it @ the fush
Who knows ewe may even hit wun on the melon & get a feed

Cant be any worse than your current method laugh.gif laugh.gif
