No - it isn't what you are imagining!!!. When someone builds a radio control aircraft, and deviates from the plans or changes something, it is called 'Kit Bashing', so I want to change something on a fishing rod .....

The butt on one of my graphites is fairly short, and doesn't fit into the rod holder. I want to extend it by a few inches. JG is the logical one to advise me here.

What do I need? Do I cut the cork off the butt and sleeve it with a piece of glass or graphite tube and reglue cork or hypalon onto it? Where do I get the material?

It's a bit rough but you could get some thin guage alloy tube the right size to shove up the blank, bepending on the taper you would have to build up the verien degree of thickness with masking tape. Alloy would add weight to the lower end of the rod though, but would be stronger for sitting in the rod holder.

Calling the kettle black are you kk ?? laugh.gif laugh.gif

It's a bloody spin rod & spin rods are designed with short butts cause you're supposed to be spining with them not decorating your rod holders laugh.gif laugh.gif

File out the butt & add a sleeve

If you're clever enough you can make it so the extention piece is detachable

You sure ??????????? cause you're asking alot of Q's laugh.gif laugh.gif

Like I said you need 2B a bit clever if you want extension to be detachable

Something like a feral used on 2 piece rods would do the trick

KK, I did exactly what Frank recommends on a beach rod that was a bit short in the butt, it worked a treat-I got the longer grip from Clark Rubber and the end cap from Bunnings....It worked a treat.....

I am going to give you another perspective.

Why not get an extension in the rod holder. Get a tube and cut out a slot for the reel handle to fit in. That way you do not have to change the action of the rod.

Klaus, just keep the spin rod as is... Buy a bait rod from jumpy (auctions) The $60 - $80 big ones you pay is nothing compared to the running around fish.gif

I may be wrong Christos but when I extended my beach rod the extension I inserted didn't come past the reel seat and I believe has had no effect on the rods action.......I'v not seen KK's rod but would expect his extension would be the same scenario-not past the reel seat therefore no change in action! fish.gif

I am trying to picture what you did but I must admit that I am not doing too well.

I am thinking that you added to the thickness and not the lenght of the rod or you have added to the lenght to the rod from the reel seat to the first runner?

Christos, I'll explain in simple steps

1: I got some alloy tubing, araldite, grip and masking tape
2: remove the butt cap
3: Cut alloy tube to required length to fit into rod with extension sticking out.
4: put masking tape onto alloy to make it fit nice and snug
5: Mix araldite and put it on masking taped extension and insert into rod.
6: Allow to dry
7: Use masking tape to thicken extension
8: Put grip on extension-I used quick grip glue to stick it in place.
9: Replace butt cap
10: Go catch some fish with your freshly bashed rod!

Christos. This is the type of rod holder, into which the rod must sit. As you can see, the butt needs to be long enough to hook under the rear arch. Mine is not.

Why dont you cut a bit out of one of the s/s holders and reweld it. leave the others for bigger rods.
