My recent trip to Narrandera I only took 2 rigs with me... Thought it would be a smart Idea to try and minimilise the tackle...

The rig in question is a 4-5kg 5"6' uglystick with a Shiano Corsair? baitcaster (magnet control on side) and 6kg Fireline...

It ok on heavy lures but no good when they get lighter. Should i stick to threadlines of lighter lures and have another 6kg rig or am i doing somthing wrong? I like this rig cause its short and easy to handle in small boat.

I ended up using it for bait fishing, and using my 3kg rig for spinning which proved a error cause i lost fish to snags!

What gear should i be using for fishing places like the bidgee?? is 6kg going to be heavy enough cause 3kg isnt! just dont have the drag there to stop em getting to the sticks!

Please tell me what you use, and what techniques you would use if fishing in this kind of fast flowing, snag filled river and what im doing wrong with baitcaster?

So ewe got spooled by snags huh Rumpus laugh.gif laugh.gif

Ugly sticks are a thing of the past even though you'll still get peeps swearing by them
They are to heavy & dont have the casting capabilities of the new modern blanks

so the baitcaster and the fireline is ok ya think???

Im very tempted to just goto all threadlines but hate having a rod and reel that i wouldnt use!!! though it still ok for just baitfishing..

Reels prob allright dosen't seem to be any probs with it.

Not a freshwater fan myself & from what I've seen of the freshwater fush they just hit hard & head for a snag & the trick is to stop them B4 they reach that snag.

The reel would handle the extra drag just need a stick to marry into the line class you want to use that's all.

Yeah i'm no freshwater expert either BUT .

I think your right in assumeing the outfits no good for light lures .

I doubt the ugly has'nt got the stopping or casting power . Yep guess i'm a goose & still swear by Ugly sticks & Power tips for that matter which i beleive are still good rods , it's just a matter of horses for corses , still remember getting my first fish on SP's using my power tip , heaps sensitive in the tip with shi7 loads of grunt when needed , not as comfy as the little flick sticks but just as effective .

Yeah i spose a nice grunty new age graphite or something would cast better BUT only if ya have the skills to start with which i don't BTW . Have seen it in print too many times to ignore .... threadlines are more suited to the lighter lures & baitcaster's heavier . That being said there are some gun caster's out there who can chuck teeny weeny things on both , guess JG's one of them , i know he's petty bloody good with the thready .

The only advice i can give you is PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE .

Only with practice will you be able to throw those wittle ones , i've been at it a while now changing rods and trying to suss it out . I have 2 baitcasting rods but only one baitcaster . I bought a 7 foot shimano 2-4kg combo , it has a shimano 200bc (i think) reel ,just a basic baitcaster & the other rod is a Abu 6ft 2-4kg which is much better to cast with .

Bust out the plug & a bucket Chadd & don't forget to tie on a white rag with the plug for Jes she'll love it . The missus's mutt weighs around five kg & man i had to use a bitta thumb pressure to stop her fom doing me in the trees laugh.gif

Big diference Smerry but again it's the weight of the solid tip blanks that make them not such a joy to use, esp if you're spinning all day.

Whereas a nice light graphite well thats a different story, you also need to have a spoofylacockassen reel as well by that I mean not all are great casting reels that's why you need to pay a bit more for a decent balanced outfit.

Hi rum rum. corsair is an ok reel . when i say Ok its just ok U can chuck heavyer plugs , but thats about all.
when you want to throw light plugs ,then you have to go to a more speacialised rod and reel.
I myself have a couple . they being Samuri 1-3kg and matched up with cronarcs theese reels have a lot more bearings , 9 .
but the main peace of gear is the rod. very light and very thin from base to tip. this allows the flex and loading up of rod when casting. I think I showed you when you were down after the fish with JG and I said these were my baby's .
For a blank thats light and thin Ihave stoped some big fish with them. had it up at jasons were we caught the cod .

ugly sticks are like broom handles compaired.
even if you go thread line the rod has to be able to cast light lures .
I can even cast soft plastics with my outfit .

again the most important peace is the rod but also a baitcaster has to be a ferrari not a holden

Hey Stevo about time you got here .

I was writing my reply & the whole time i was thinking Steve's wittle chuggachug would weigh bugger all , bet he'll shoot me down , ps was'nt worried bout JG's reply. laugh.gif

Naa seriously , I take your points onboard both of yours , & i'll endevor not to beleive all i read but the point i was trying to make was about practice & the fact that he's got the rod he should use it , albeit even if it is to chuck heavier lures cause he'll still be useing it & getting the much needed practice .

I dont see the point of Chadd going out & forking out a heap of hard earned for a rod only to find out he still can't cast it for shite with the small lures , he'd probly put it threw the roof . laugh.gif

Just a Q for youse .

Lets say i'm an average caster with a b/c & i went & bought a setup like yours, do you think i would be able to cast small lures straight outta the box ?

Or would i need some practice with it first ?

& sorry Chadd i'm not saying that your a crap caster either m8 , infact i have no doubts your better than me . laugh.gif

& i'm not trying to start arguments either , i just need some convincing to buy another combo cause think i'd rather just chuck small stuff with the flick stick for now but some evidence in the form of writing may help convince the missus i need a new one laugh.gif laugh.gif

Smerry ewe Brurry irriot laugh.gif laugh.gif

Tackle makes a huge difference but even the best gear is no good if you dont use it on a regular basis

And it's not a very good idea to set up a bucket in the backyard to practice on either simple reason your wrist & motions get accustomed to the exact same repetative action every cast which never happens when you're out on the water.

If you think you can cast resonably well with the gear you got . then all practice will do is make you better with the gear YOU GOT.
If chad was to go and buy a new rod to cast small lures , then he would need a custom rod & a decent reel to go with it.
its that simple. and then you can practice on the new rod for a bit cus you allready know how to cast. biggrin.gif
for example, you know how to ride a horse , the horse you have is a shetland pony that craps everywhere tongue.gif but you still know how to ride him , then I come along and give you a racing horse to ride. and then you crap everywhere laugh.gif .
with a bit of practice you can handle the raceing one too . then you put the poor little pony away cos you got a race horse.

casting small lures outa the box > Yes with a few practice goes. thats if you can cast resonably first up.

BUT I would rcomend you try a race horse first before you buy one , if you know anybody that hase one.

Well when i come up to see my mate Jumpy, Ill get a new rod for my abu 5600c4 to cast the heavier stuff and ill use my new threadline for the lighter stuff, just for simplicity..

Also its not a corsair sorry, its a callisto (the cheapest of the shimano baitcsters)

The 5'6 Uglystick, While maybe no good for this is still one of my fav little rods and id really like to use it, maybe just for bait fishing with the callisto baitcaster and some mono? or trolling it would be good.. shame the callisto doesnt have a drag alarm...
