Beach & Rock Fishing Options

I have a 12ft beach rod with a alvey surf champion reel,And was wondering what size and type of line to put on it for universal use.Thanks Phil.

All depends on the rod.

12 ft dosen't tell you much exept it's length not it's rating.

Have a look for a sticker which may be on the rod, on it it will give you the rods line class rating.

You can vary the line class to heavier but I wouldn't go lighter.

Rods are designed to take a certain load generally the amount of fibreglass mat layers determines this.

If you use a line class lighter than what is specified you wont get to use the rods action to it's full designed action & you'll be snapping the line quite a fair bit as the rod wont give you that shock absorbing action.

I said you can go a wee bit hevier line , reason I said that was cause you mentioned fushing the rocks & the heavier line will give you some sort of protection against the rocks where it can rub & the abrasive action will pop you off.

In saying that I'll garauntee you that you will get alot more bites with the lighter lines so if you're going to fish heavier line then tie on a long light leader & on apply drag to suit the lighter line

I mainly fish from the rocks, and I use an Alvey. The one I have is a little lighter then the one you described. I prefer to use a line with more resistance to line abrasion. The weight I have used on two interchangeable reels is 12 - 15 lb. I also use a lighter trace from the rocks and sometimes from the beach.

i always have two spools for my beach outfits so as to keep this simple if the rod class is like yours i would have 8kg on one and 12 on the other.

when fishing for bream or whiting off the beach i run the lighter line but if there are larger fish about then its the heaver outfit

and as jumpus has said use the lightest leader u can for bream and whiting i will go down as far 2kg up to 5mts long, hope this helps
