hey fellow boaters,
was chatting to a mate this morning who asked me what do i prefer a fiberglass boat or a tinnie boat, i told him it all depends on what size boat he wants and what car he would use to tow the boat and what type of fishing we would do, what does every 1 else think ? -------------------- ............GLOBAL WARMING............

Primarily Fishing, I think Plate alloy is hard to beat if going offshore etc, Can handle a bit more knocking around and your not so worried about niose etc..
If its a fishing / Family boat i think glass offers a comfortable ride If my name was poly id say...... If your just looking for a river fishing boat its hard to go past a small, light tinny.. |

yeah but ive got a glass boat now and before this boat i had a 15 foot tinnie, i found the tinnie to be to bumpy as where the glass i feel rides the swell better and softer, i guess with a tinnie u can pull up at the ramp and not be as worried about pulling up on the ramp or any hidden underwater rocks as with the glass boat im always carefull

well my name is poly and i am going to have a say in this one, if u are considering a new boat then polycraft should be on your checklist for these reasons 1 they are tougher than a prest tinney's ride as well as a glass boat and the plastic they are made from is very buoyant, the color will not fade or need to be repainted at any time, it is very easy to work on them with wood tools
now that i have owned one for 3 years i could not see myself going back to a glass or alloy boat ![]() -------------------- bugger it's sold, got meself a house instead

I have opted for aluminium, although the ride is harder they are a lot easier to handle, I haven't had the experience of a large alloy! but I would have been confident to go to NZ Land in my 19ft Glass boat, I think that if you was to hit a large sharp object it would tear any material they were made from dependant upon speed of course. I think GRP boats will be around a while yet.

Well I've both types over the years even had a poly as well see hear
![]() http://www.fishing-oz-style.info/forum/ind...hp?showtopic=51 These days I have a couple of goats both alloy but 2 completely different boats & I'm not refering to size either I honestly could never see myself going back to a glass boat unless of course it's perpose was 2B a lardy Dah Boat. Alloy boats are built for one specific purpose in mind A Fishing Platform How the boat rides well that's determined by material used deadrise etc I'd like to see how many glass boats can handle a sea as well as my big tinny or should I say Plate Boat ![]() -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

it also depends on how much money $$$$ the person who is looking at buying a boat hs got as well, i havnt been in a new alloy as of yet, but i have been in a near new glass boat and thought it was great, not every 1 in this world can afford a new or near new boat so i guess one would have to look at what they can get in the price range of what they can spend and then compare the pair,
and i agree with poly regarding the poly's, i havnt heard any bad reports regarding them as of yet, quote Jumpus GooDarus Posted Today, 07:04 PM How the boat rides well that's determined by material used deadrise etc I'd like to see how many glass boats can handle a sea as well as my big tinny or should I say Plate Boat have u tested a glass boat which has got the same specs are ur plate boat has got jg ? -------------------- ............GLOBAL WARMING............

Well the boat I had prior to my Plate Boat was a 23 ft Carrabean did a fair bit of work on it B4 starting to fish out of it it originally had an inboard which I didn't want so I beefed up the transom & built a pod for the 2 new 140 HP Evenrudes [ What a load of crap they were]
So yes the specs were pretty similar prior to the carabean I had a 18ft tinny well the carrabean was luxuary compared to the tinny but bear in mind I had to do alot of glassing on the carrabean like most glass boats gunnels way to high cut them down. When I got my plate boat found it was awesome perfect gunnel hight self draining etc etc & you're correct a good plate boat costs more but dont forget they also retain there value alot better than a glass boat thats why back then I bought the carrabean cause I couldn't afford a plate boat. My honest opinion ? reckon my Plate boat out performed the carrabean in all aspecs if there's one thing I have to say about the plate boat I ALWAYS FEEL SAFE IN IT & that rides high in my books -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

so are you saying that for fishing a plate boat is the best option remembering if you have got enought $$$$ to spend on a plate boat,
because like many other people i use my boat for more then just fishing, during the summer i often take 5 or 6 friends out with us for a cruise on the harbour or the bays, i also do a lot of water skiing and wwake boarding and tubeing, i guess it all comes down to trying to find that perfect boat (which doesnt exist) for everything that you want it for, unless of course you have plenty of $$$$ to buy a few boats for each water sport -------------------- ............GLOBAL WARMING............

No such thing as a perfect boat which can do everything cause everyone uses their boats differently for example years ago when I had the 18ft tinny I could fish alot more places than when I had the bigger boats.
I was going to do a trip around Oz 3 years back & thats why I got the little 4.8 meter tinny got crook & didn't go, I was going to sell it last year motor had only done 30 hrs but started fart arsing about with SP's & fishing rivers Pt Hacking, Towra & all those places I cant get into with the big boat & tell you what I was enjoying so I decided to keep the little tinny as well -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

yep thats what im saying , you cant get the perfect 1 boat for all of your water needs, unless you have big $$$ to buy ya self the perfect boat for out side and another for inside ect ect......
but ya gotta gotta remember that a hell of a lot of fishos also have families and when the boat isnt being used for fishing its prob being used for towing the kids on a tube or something like that -------------------- ............GLOBAL WARMING............

exactly right jumpas. cannot find the perfect boat!!
If i had the money, I would buy a cruise craft explorer 625, that would be my ultimate boat.. However I cant, and I like hustler want to ski/board behind my boat, so I need at least 90hp, but i also want to be able to take it offshore, Not 10 miles but be able to get out there on a satisfactory day and get home if it did turn to crap.. So Im not yet sure where to go.. Something in a cuddy cabin, around the 5.5m with a 130hp would suit me well. |

I've heard corrosion for whatever reason can be a big problem in alloy boats.
Glass boats always seem more user friendly, softer, smoother, quieter, warmer. If I was buying a new boat I'd buy what I have now but with a slightly larger motor. -------------------- ![]() SEAFARER: Fine as a Fairy's Fart |

Alloy boats only cop corrosion because of a bad fit out & neglect no different to glass boats copping osmosis
About the only thing I agree with you on Fed is power ![]() And not because I'm a rev head either the bigger the motor/'s means you dont have to work it/them as hard but the power is there when you want it. I had a guy checking out my bigger goat which has a pair of 115's on the back he's just ordered a new plate boat from stessel slightly bigger than mine but a centre consol [waste of a hull in my books] but just goes to show the logic of some people. Anyway he's already got the motor yes a single & it's a yammy 115 hp 2 stroke apparantly he got it @ a good price well I laughed @ him told him the motor would struggle getting the boat up not to mention how slow it would be & this guy intends to fish places likes Browns as well. Even gave him some figures what my boat did with the twin 85 hp 2 strokes & what it can do with just one of the 115's running but guess that info fell on deaf ears, his reply was it's only a centre consol & dosen't have the weight of a hardtop on it ![]() ![]() I gave up talking to him dont like talking to iriots esp after I tried explaining weight is only a small factor & the main obstacle is the hull dragging through the water -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

RUM this may sound like an ad for poly but i would not right them off your list, they build a top 5.3 cudy put a 115 on the back and have all the fun u want it will give u the performance of glass and the toughness of alloy, the 625 will come in time as that is the boat u would truly love and i don't blame u for that we have a gr8 sight where u can go to get info on poly's the members there will give u all the help u could ever need and they will be honest with u ![]() ![]() so come along members let,s help RUM find the best boat in the intermediate range we can, i have had my say so come no have a go but u must be under $33.000 for B M T -------------------- bugger it's sold, got meself a house instead

poly I think you've mis read somewhere along the line
Even B4 I even bothered to do a search of the boat I felt something was haywire there is no possible way in the world you can can a genuine plate boat for that price & I hadn't looked @ prices for years. And you did say B M T $30.820 B oat M otor T railer After doing a search which I might add yeilded very little info of the boat let alone the link you posted maybe it was just me but I found no specks on the boat whatso ever which is a worry as far as I'm concerned every other site throws specs in your face maybe you can find the specs ?? Anyway I did find a price on the 5.2 meter boat & it was $44,990 & the link you gave only had 2 sizes listed so I dont know why in the hell you're putting on the angry face smilly for ?? In another thread I mentioned that I went to the boat show today even the tinny's went for more than $30 k & some of the plate boats that I saw were built to budget nothing there really caught my eye for me to have a rave about. In fact some of the plate boats even had ply floors talk about building to budget it's very easy to come up & say I found a boat for 20, 30 or $50 k what one has to then do is look @ what one gets for their money & if you have to go out & spend another $15 k + on the boat to fit it out then I'm afraid you haven't done your homework & you've been sucked in by the dealer. Some of you may recall a thread back @ SF where I was argueing with a couple of the members there about plate boats ????????? The boat in Question was a trailcraft & my arguement was that it was not a true plate boat & alloy sheet was used everywhere except the hull ?? Well I went looking for the Trailcraft stand but they didn't have one nor did I see any of there boats was in one of those moods for a debate had to get my money's worth as there was nothing else @ the show of interest to me ![]() Anyway what I did find was a couple of responsible Plate Boat Dealers who advertised their product correctly unlike Trailcraft does the boats were advertised as Plate Bottom Boats & these boats didn't even have creased sides like the Trailcraft do. My Advice to anyone in the market for a new boat is to look @ the 2nd hand market you'll find alot of people buy new boats keep them for a couple of years & rarely ever used them in the time they owned them these boats have very low hrs & come with alot of accessories which really dont feature in the price you should be able to pick up a pretty good deal if you're not one of those impatient people who wants it 2morrow Whoops 4got the link http://www.tradingpost.com.au/dealerproduc...hotoDisplay.asp -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

Mate I can tell you one thing for sure think I've been retired for about 6 years now & I nearly got a heart attack when I started redoing up the goats.
Just how much things have gone up in that time Alloy for example has skyrocketed @ least 50% in the last 6 years one thing I'm good @ is I've got a bit of a photographic memory & know how much I paid per sheet 6 yeas back & what I had to pay recently. So when I saw $30 for the package something didn't add up, recall some 8 years back I got the itch for a bigger boat & went down to Gerrigong to price a hull only upainted just a bare shell cause I like to do my own fitouts back then I was looking @ $24 k just for the hull -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

That is exactly what I was talking about poly !
Go replace that boat new @ 2days prices & you'll be shocked not to mention if you're not in a hurry bet you can shave the price tag off the one you posted not to mention all the accessories which weren't listed but come with the GOAT. Just by looking @ the picture alone you can see that goat has had very little usage Give you guys another example & I wont mention what Dave did either cause you'll laugh @ him ![]() Another mate of mine going back about 4 years wanted to buy a boat well I told him to look around for a good used one, this advice he did not heed esp being his 1st boat he ended up going out & buying some fibreglass thingamagoaty brand spanker think he paid about 70 - $ 80 k. If that was not bad enough ended up trading his new BMW in & bought a bloody comodore of all cars so as he could tow it boat was around the 22 ft mark. Anyways ran into him a few months back & asked how the Goat was going well he had sold it reason given Lack of Usage -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

You want everything today but never sit back to consider the consequences What even makes you think you can afford to even use a new boat Rum ??? Having an additional loan to pay off & what if something goes wrong & you have to come up with $$$'s to fix it ???
