Im looking at getting a downrigger or 2 and dont know much about them, so i need your help.
I fish saltwater mainly for Snapper and trawl for kings in the summer months, with the odd trip out to the shelf for Tuna. I can afford to get 1 top of the range downrigger which i can connect threw cannon link to my hummingbird fishfinder. This would alow me to control the depth at the helm and be viewed on the fishfinder. option 2 Get a standard electric version for about half that. option 3 Get one or even two manual downriggers. (do you get tangles when running two downriggers?) What would you do and why? -------------------- insanity takes it's toll, I make sure I have plenty of spare change

QUOTE I can afford to get 1 top of the range downrigger which i can connect threw cannon link to my hummingbird fishfinder. Wouldn't waste my Drakma on those no need for them, sounder will show true depth & linking link will deviate drastically depending on weight of bomb with speed you're trolloping faster ewe trollop higher bomb will rise to the surface giving an inaccurate read. QUOTE option 2 Get a standard electric version for about half that. Electric are far better esp if out on your own all it takes is a push of the button QUOTE option 3 Get one or even two manual downriggers. (do you get tangles when running two downriggers?) Nope just stay with the wun I do have a pair of Scotty2Hotty's but very rare ever use both wun is more than enough ewe wont get tangles & realistically ewe really only want wun girly fush on @ a time. Make sure rigger ewe get has a swivel base & dont do wot so many do & go oversize on bombs 7lb is more than enough in swallow water down to 20 meters anything deeper go up to the 10 lb'r -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

Thanks Jumpy
i have narrowed it down to 2 models if going for a manual down rigger this one ![]() downrigger is made of marine grade alloy and stainless steel, then anodized with a silver and black finish. No plastic anywhere, excepting the Nylon® boom rollers. Here’s some pictures of both the manual and electric versions, you can see it in operation here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLRlRUNgUfU and here, off Sydney: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xb_BonViTm4 And here's some of its important features: A 950mm one piece boom, one of the longest in the business. This helps to keep your cable and weight well clear of the prop and transom. The boom tilts and locks into the vertical position, meaning you don't have to reach out over the water- which can be risky- to attach the line from your reel. The tilt and lock also helps when maneuvering around wharves, or similar; A boom head, which swivels around the top of the boom arm. This is a really good feature. The boom head on our downrigger swivels on greased needle rollers to track the weight and cable. This means the cable doesn’t ride up the side of the boom head rollers when the boat makes a sudden turn; A detachable, resettable depth counter. This unit reads down to 1000 feet and resets at the touch of a button. THIS counter can be quickly removed from your downrigger and mounted on a jig rod (no tools required.) If you’re using expensive knife jigs over a reef or wreck, where you know the depth of the structure from your depth sounder, you can sink the sinking jig a few feet short of the snag by keeping an eye on the counter readout. We’ve found this technique is a real money saver. (The counter is available separately for $20, inc P&P.) AN aluminium rod holder, attached to the rear of the downrigger. The holder is adjustable for angle with a screwdriver, and has a cross pin for securing mounting of rods fitted with a gimbal slot base; TWO hundred feet of 200-pound Dyneema braid. Braid is narrower than steel cable and doesn’t hum, in the water. More braid or cable can be added if you plan to fish deeper water. A Du-bro Shock Kit, on the end of the braid. These kits feature a compressible spring, which means if you wind your weight up quickly (as often happens, after a strike) the Shock Kit will protect against your weight banging into the end of the boom; A long shaft gimbal mount is attached to your downrigger’s base. It fits straight into your boat’s rod holder: The base is made from solid aluminium, not tube, and is very strong. Note that rodholder fitted downriggers should not be fitted into plastic rodholders. Use a strong aluminium or stainless steel rodholder, available at any marine shop. An alternative option is our detachable tongue and groove base mounting kit: Price of the manual downrigger complete (as described above) is $425, including delivery. Price of the electric version is $695. That one has a powerful electric motor fitted that pulls up 20-pound plus weights easily. Ours has a circuit breaker rather than glass fuses (like the Scottys) for overload protection. Let me know what else you need to know? If you want to let me know your mailing address I’ll send you a free DVD showing it in operation. Thanks for your inquiry, -------------------- insanity takes it's toll, I make sure I have plenty of spare change

![]() They are built to take a 7 - 8lbs bomb max reccomendation the booms are 750mm long and the spool can take alot of line however we sell with 150yd 250lbs dyneema braid . We have sold quite a few to sydney siders who chase the kings . They are built from alloy and powdercoated black. They sell in the shops for $500.00 but i could let you have one for $350.00 . i can also do you a gimbal mount to fit in your rod holder . The gimbals sell for $100.00 i could let you have one for $50.00. I will also throw in a couple of release clips -------------------- insanity takes it's toll, I make sure I have plenty of spare change

A bit of nonsense by the mob advertising them but they all do it rivial tings that mean nut ting like this wun
QUOTE A 950mm one piece boom, one of the longest in the business. This helps to keep your cable and weight well clear of the prop and transom. The boom tilts and locks into the vertical position, My Scotty2Hotty's exend out to 1500mm but never bother to extend them as there is no need mne also tilt back but find that to be a pain is the arse esp on my goats with walk out transoms. Find it best to have a swivel base aimed out around 40 degrees & have the s/s wire run through a slider thingy thats alot easier than pulling bomb in over the transom Not a good pic but ewe should get the idea yellow thingy is the slider tied off to goat with black cord, I just pull it when I want the bomb http://www.fishingozstyle.info/forums/inde...?showtopic=2336 -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

I ordered my fishfinder from JandH and was quite happy with price and delivery. No issues and as long as you stay below 1000 bucks (Aus) there should not be any import duties.
You may have extra costs if there is a warranty issue though, but at half the local price you can always buy a new one :-) Jack -------------------- ![]() |

Looks like it should be tall enofgh to clear the hand rails that come off the gunnels and down to the pod.
I will go electric I think but I cant decide if I go all out with a Cannon or save a few bucks and get a Scotty? After reading a few forums they said some of them have had problems with the bottom trackin system of the cannons. Thats a much better pic, thanks for posting. Are you running wire cable? Does it hum much? Whats the red button for And lastly does it count off the depth in ft or meters? -------------------- insanity takes it's toll, I make sure I have plenty of spare change

No probs clearing handrails easy 6 - 7 inch's clearance
See if I can dispell sum of the bullashitta peeps go on about QUOTE I will go electric I think but I cant decide if I go all out with a Cannon or save a few bucks and get a Scotty? I see alot of goats in the bay downrigging & the bulk are using cannons personally I think it's because they're cheaper not any better & peeps tend to rave on cause they own sum ting. Cant compare cause I've only used the Scotty2Hotty's & so do my mates & I've heard no complaints from any of them. I get well looked after with gear & when I asked how many of the scottys come back for repairs I was was told zero & I believe that cause I've never seen any 2nd hand units there. QUOTE After reading a few forums they said some of them have had problems with the bottom trackin system of the cannons. Like I said in an early reply, not needed & a waste of time, just set the depth via count meter & be mindfull of the angle of line out the back depending on troll speed. Quicker the speed the higher the bomb will rise to the surface, sitting on say 1 knot of speed bomb will be directly behind the transom & your sounder will record it on the screen so when ewe see it dont get a ![]() QUOTE Are you running wire cable? Does it hum much? Yep running wire not dacron & it's bullshit about the huming I've never had that prob, also read peeps whinging about the s/s wire on the scotty's rusting up, that's another wank. It does stain but only due to contaminants on the wire not the wire actually rusting QUOTE Whats the red button for 2b honest I have no idea ![]() I'll have to look next time out QUOTE And lastly does it count off the depth in ft or meters? Being Amellican it's in feet, yanks are slow converting to metric You'll no doubt ask alot more Q's when ewe get wun may even pin a thread on do, dont's & tips on how to downrigg -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

check this out Kungys aka Girly fush in all honesty have 2b wun of the easiest species to ketch Many ways/methods of fushing for them none right or wrong The Banks [place fushed in video] has to be wun of the best kung reefs going around & you'd have to be a proper dill not to ketch the girly fush there. We actually had a double hookup there wun year trolling 3 kg stripys around for marlins these kungs were in the 40 kg class. Now getting back to the vid, really think all these guys trully have a wank going on about scent & just repeat the nonsense others have said, only 2 things ewe need to know about ketching squid Clean water type of jig to be used if in shallow water [5 meters] use a slow sinking jig else ewe'll keep ketching the bottom 7 meter or deeper go a fast sinking jig to get ewe down & keep ewe there longer in the zone. Setup on their goat ????????? Dont like it @ all rod is to far aft from the bomb allowing to much drop back on mainline I like to aim my rod around 30 degree's out with it starting to load up on the bomb little if any drop back -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

My 2 bobs worth...
I have a Scotty 1050.. No frills and does the job perfectly. I can see the bomb on my sounder, but i just switched the sounder back to feet to stop my confusion. It has wire that is fine, but it has hummed twice when i was out.. Dont know why it only does it sometimes, but it does. But a King took our little squidy mid hum ![]() I dont use the rod holder that comes with it, I use the one on the boat, but it is loaded at all times with no slack.. Also, mine is installed with the arm pointed out to the side, not out the back near the motor. I have enough problems with tangles without having another one (Dont touch that one Jumpy) ![]() ![]() Regarding squid; My catch rate is improving each trip out, but Jumpy has this seriously sussed... I feel sometimes people make it harder than it has to be at times... No need for a $30 jig, if you find the school... -------------------- Don't hate me, cause you ain't me... :)

Thanks bees
Jumpy should make his own video on squiding to catch girly fish, as long as he doesnt wear his mankini, it would sell like hot cakes. Wish we had more kingys down this way, they are so hard to find and when we do they are on its only the rats. Now I have bite the bullet & feeling very broke. I hope we can find them in deeper water. It was such a hard desion as no one I know has a downrigger in batemans bay, come to think of it I havent seen any at the ramp either. Had the same problem when I bought my Electric motor, now everyone has one. Now im alittle dissapointed I didnt get co- pilot. So with that in mind I went for the Cannon Mag 20 and cannonlink. Shoped around and was able to save heaps. Got it at half price. Now I await nervously until it arives. -------------------- insanity takes it's toll, I make sure I have plenty of spare change

I dont know your areas, but they are everywhere up here. Just get a few locations under your belt and frequent them all during your session. Once you get everything set up, you will see them on your sounder around the bait schools and most times know when your going to get a hit. Hmm follow the ducks? Wonder what would happen if I followed the Swans.
That button could be handy if you wanted to lock the boom arm out of the way. Do you take your down rigger off when not in use? I was reading the manual on the cannon downrigger about Positive Ion Control. QUOTE It allows you to use electricity to control this charge on your downriggers. It applies a variable .2 to 1.2 Volts to the trolling cable at all times. All metal parts, including the hull if metal, motor, thru hull fittings must be connected using a bonding wire. The zinc anodes placed on your hull, propeller etc protect the metal from natural corrosion that occurs when metals of different types that are physical or electrically connected and immersed in sea water. If your boat and zincs are set up correctly, the voltage on the stainless downrigger wire should be positive when submerged. Commercial fisherman know that fish, especially certain species, are attracted to positive charge and repelled by negative charges. So how would I check that, anodes appear fine and whats this about a bonding wire? Is that just an earth to the battery, what if i run more than one battery systems like a 12 and 24 volt system. -------------------- insanity takes it's toll, I make sure I have plenty of spare change

Found a download for my Cannon mag20 downrigger
And found some more info on QUOTE The Short Stop System The Short Stop system is composed of three critical components: the electronic unit, the reel set screw, and the trolling weight insulator. While the downrigger cable is in the water, there is a minute electrical current that flows between the cable and the grounded metal boat components in the water. When the cable clears the water, this current flow will stop. The Short Stop system senses this interruption and turns off the motor. The trolling weight insulator is used to break the cable contact to the water while the weight is still in the water. The reel set screw allows the circuit path to be made through the structure of the downrigger. But wait there is more hope the pic is clear enofgh. ![]() QUOTE Measuring the Natural Electrolysis and PIC Voltage on Your Boat A voltmeter with a scale of zero to one volt will measure the natural electrolysis. Place the ground lead of the meter on the motor or the battery ground. Place the positive lead on the stainless steel downrigger cable while it is in the water. The downrigger must be unplugged. The voltage you measure on the volt meter is your boat’s natural electrolysis voltage. Use the same set up to measure the PIC voltage; just plug in the Mag 20 DT and adjust the PIC knob to the voltage desired. Using Positive Ion Control Positive Ion Control is very effective when trolling. The zone of attraction created at the downrigger wire will attract the fish. It is best to use a short drop back between the downrigger release and the lure. Drop backs of 10 to 20 ft. are typical. A drop back of 50 to 100 ft. will entirely negate the effects of the PIC circuit. Fishing depths greater than 125 ft. may require a slightly higher PIC voltage. If you return to shallow water fishing remember to turn the PIC voltage down again. The correct PIC setting for your best fishing advantage varies, depending on fish type and location. For example, the proper setting for Puget Sound Steelhead may not be effective for Great Lakes Steelhead. To fully benefit from PIC technology, it is important that you experiment with the PIC setting to find the proper voltage for the gamefish in your area. For more information on this subject, refer to “Secrets of Fishing with Electricity” by Ollie Rode. Somehow I dont think it work as good as this video, http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=46f_1237671541 and some of it is probably dribble but it seems important for the auto stop feature. Jumpas you would have a electric current on your downrigger wire i would think. May not be ajustable but would be intresting to measure it with a vault meter. -------------------- insanity takes it's toll, I make sure I have plenty of spare change

Current can only flow when + & - run through a circuit & that will only happen when the circuit is activated via the switch button & ewe only engage that button when you're retrieving the bomb. BUT I just couldn't stop laughing all night @ the comments this guy was making Arty fron fish theorapy kept looking @ us & came over to see what we were laughing @ ![]() Personally just my opinion I dont like the cannon just a manual model on show & I did well not to ask about that PIC = Positive Ion Control thingy on their electric models esp when this guy kept narking on how dacron is better than wire cable, last I heard dacron wont transfer electricity so it cant power up & turn the fishys into a feeding fiasco ![]() Then he started ramping on about the leather jackets taking jigs & biting anything they can get their teeth into, thank goodness he's recomending dacron cause leather jackets surely cant bite that stuff off ![]() I was in stich's by the end of the night esp when he said hooking up a live squiddy was velly complicated & it was much easier to bridal up a yakka ![]() -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

Hey Sir Reel Was @ the club last night & they had CreamOfSumOldGuy from sum place called the downrigger shop giving a demo & talk on downrigging & he was pushing the cannon. Should of asked him apout the PIC and will it work in a plastic boat. How much was he asking for the manual downrigger, prob as much as a electric one from the states. Personally just my opinion I dont like the cannon I wont hold that against you. The reason for this model is I can connect it to my fishfinder and make adjustment to the downrigger from the helm. Will still need to adjust the reel to take up slack line though. Then he started ramping on about the leather jackets taking jigs & biting anything they can get their teeth into, thank goodness he's recomending dacron cause leather jackets surely cant bite that stuff off ![]() Did this fella have any idea what he was talking bout Hope those Leather jacket dont eat my bomb lol. I got mine last week and fitted over the weekend. If this rain ever stops I might get to test it out. Have you tried trawling lures down deep and what style of lure worked for you? -------------------- insanity takes it's toll, I make sure I have plenty of spare change

QUOTE How much was he asking for the manual downrigger, prob as much as a electric one from the states Really wasn't interested besides I was to busy laughing all night was in wun of my hysterical moods my ribs were hurting QUOTE I wont hold that against you. The reason for this model is I can connect it to my fishfinder and make adjustment to the downrigger from the helm. Like I said tis just my personal view, been using the Scotty2Hottys & prob a wee bit bias towards them QUOTE Did this fella have any idea what he was talking bout Hope those Leather jacket dont eat my bomb lol. He started going on about fushng back in the 70's & he must not have been that good cause he failed to decribe how good it really was back then or he didn't get out very often to really know wot it was all about back then. Mr Shinny Head knows wot it was all about I used to fush on his boat back then Prob with guys like CreamOfSumOldGuy they're here 4 only wun reason TO SELL THEIR PRODUCTS That's fine if they keep it fair dinkum but they do alot of bullashitta & peeps hu dont know any better start spreading that same bullashitta & that's wot pee's me off. He was the guy hu gave Al McLashan that dooberlacky line counter on that show they got the big eye tuna tis same dooberlacky line counter they use on the canon rigger prob the reason they recomend dacron cause wire would chew out the counter. On the Scotty2Hottys counter works off a gear if i'm corect built into the spool Your cannon will just fine alot of peeps rave about them, I'm not bagging the unit itself just sum of the bullashitta i've heard QUOTE Have you tried trawling lures down deep and what style of lure worked for you? Just a wee bit back when I was using both Scotty2Hottys I'd run a squid on wun & a BIG plastic on the other think only wun hit on the plastic but really putting a live/fresh squid in front of a girly fish is like offering chocolate to a choco holic cant resist & will take even if not feeding. Ewe wont get that same success using live yakka's -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

Have you tried trawling lures down deep and what style of lure worked for you? Im 1 for 1 on the plastics downrigged. Only did it cause I only caught 1 squid in 2hrs and it got hit ![]() Im enjoying this thread for a couple of reasons... 1. Im not an experienced fisho, but try and learn everytime i fish. 2. Downrigging gives me a chance to fish properly... I procure my own bait...explore fishy spots that hold bait... And most times get a hit... Anyone that can catch bait will have success i believe... Jumpy, you don't suffer fools lightly mate, but let that bloke sell his spool bud, he has kids to feed!! ![]() ![]() Sir Reel, after your first trip, comeback and re-read the thread.. Jumpy has given some great advice IMO... Dont listen to the hype ![]() ![]() -------------------- Don't hate me, cause you ain't me... :)

QUOTE Im 1 for 1 on the plastics downrigged. I tink there's a time for lures & a different time for live baits realistically ewe cant or shouldn't do both @ he same time. 1stly ewe really should be aware of the area ewe are fushing if ewe know the fish are there then live bit is definately the go with squid as a preference. With live bait you're trolling @ very low speed which realistically makes it impossible to pull lures big SP's are the exception, wot ewe look for is large schools of baitfush & ewe work them may lose school after only traveling 20 meters no probs just turn the boat around & find them again wot ewe are trying to do is just hover over them. If kungs are about they'll come to the baitfishys. If ewe aim to troll lures 4get about your downrigger it'll be a hinderence more thn an asset with lures like the deeper diving bombers F12's F18's they'll still get down to the depth range or close enough as to where ewe would've had the bomb set difference is ewe can know run a good spread of 3 - 4 lures & they'll allow ewe to increase boat speed which in turn allows ewe to cover alot more area in search of the girlys. Personaaly i can can only cop a few hrs of girly fushing get bored after that even if they're thick get more of a kick ketching the squiddy's 2b be honest I can sit behind the wheel all day pulling skirted lures chasing gamefish & dont mind that @ all but i dot war high heels doing that & am alot more comfortable ![]() -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

Catching squid is a bit hit and miss for me. The water coming out of the river always seems to make the water murkey, when we do get them they are huge. I have some areas outside of the heads but then the wind and swell generally mucks it up. I know fresh is way better than frozzen. There are some squid you can buy in a blue and white box, its called Californian squid. The kings love strips & whole pieces of that. Will probaby take some as back up.
Whats those F12's F18's you talk about. Got a picy or link? I have some rapalas that dive deep & a big blade lure, some sps with long tails & some skirted lures I might give a go. Heard there are som bonitos about. -------------------- insanity takes it's toll, I make sure I have plenty of spare change

I dont have any probs ketching kungs on frozen squid on days squiddy's are thick I stock up & freeze them in individual bags thaw out as I need need if live wuns get ellusive to ketch.
Have even caught up to 3 kungs on wun squid last wun got nailed just on the squids hook previous girly must've liked Head ![]() Smaller squid have started arriving allready in close, you'll start to notice a decline of the bigger squids as time goes by QUOTE Whats those F12's F18's you talk about. QUOTE 2. click downrigger club. QUOTE Downriggers Club Welcome To The Downriggers Club Welcome to The Downriggers Club any I hope you will join our new fishing club. It has taken quite a bit of planning, many, many phone calls and emails but the groundwork has been done and now everyone can enjoy the results over the coming years. We are going to organise downrigging competitions in the coming months and these comps will be held in Pittwater and Broken Bay. Other areas will become involved in the near future including offshore. All you have to do to enter or join our club is to contact us via our booking page. In the comments section, provide us with your postal address, contact details and email address and we will join you up. The idea of this club is not to only run competitions but to provide you all with a website that is full of information on products, locations, tips and formulas to catch fish. I will endeavor to put up new product information for you all once a month at least. I must stress that this club is aimed at all friendly people that love to have a great time and freely share information. Our competitions are aimed at having fun and getting out on the water not necessarily catching the most or biggest fish. Classes of competitions are yet to be confirmed but all the usual – Largest Fish – Mystery Species- Lucky Size and – Angler Of The Year (most species not biggest fish) and finally Clubman Of The Year. This last category is for those wonderful people that spend more time organizing and helping people than they get to fish. Other benefits. If you are a club member and join us for a charter you will get to fish for up to an extra 2 hours (weekdays only) just because you are a club member. We are talking with Flybridge Performance Fishing Tackle (importers of Walker Products) and they are willing to support our club and our members. The benefits are being talked over and shortly we may be able to announce a deal regarding their fine, robust, inexpensive equipment. If you are going to buy a downrigger talk to me first and we can organise so your local tackle shop can supply you with their wonderful products at a fraction of their competitors. Buy Walker Downriggers and you wont be disappointed. I hope you enjoy the articles and upcoming stories. Best Wishes. something i read on that site that makes sence trawl with the current not against it. All the fish caught were when travilling with the current would you drown a squid going against the current as he suggests Wouldn't call it gospell & dont really agree with the claim Do agree that fish wont waste their energy swiming into a current but still gives no merit to the claim simple because the initial attraction for the fush is the boat itself [your boat is the best FAD you've got] prop wash also gets them curious after which they see the bait/lure. Have seen species like marlin/tuna zoom in on lures up to 100 meters away port & starboard off the boat. When this happens they have no probs directing their attention to the bait, also bear in mind we only witness surface current 5 meters below chances are there's no current @ all. Admittingly on marlin/tuna troll days have had all the strikes going in only wun direction & 2b honest against the current ps] squid/live bait wont drown trolling them against the current -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

didnt think you could drown a squid
speaking of squid, the fish i caught on the weekend had spat out a lot of baby sqidies as well as some white bait. Cannon have another acsesory for the down rigger its a speed and temp gage you can send down on the bomb it also measures % of light works on batteries and wireless transmits info back to the unit not recamended for salt water use though -------------------- insanity takes it's toll, I make sure I have plenty of spare change

Speed sensor is a total waste of time no different than those paddle types used on sounders, varying current speeds [running with & against] gives ewe inacurate speed readings unlike GPS which will allways give ewe true speed.
Temp gauge would be very nifty, if ewe've ever been down on scuba or just plain old snorkel'd temp changed are noticed right away as ewe decend -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |
