Hey guys
I'll finish work early today and go start the seafarer for the first time. Apperantly its been sitting for around a year. It had a complete rebuilt and used only a couple of or so outing after rebuilt. It should be allright. The question is... should I use some hot water to soften the impeller? Thats what i read somewhere before...? I'll buy a new battery and some fresh fuel and give it a go... This post has been edited by boris: Apr 9 2008, 03:40 PM -------------------- Boris

Boris, we used to boil nylon propellers (for R.C. aircraft) to try and get then back to a flexible state. Impellers are rubber and I feel that if they harden, then no amount of hot water will change that state. If it pumps water then I would not bother. If it was rebuilt a year ago, then it should have received a new impeller. Try it, thats all you can do.

Impellor should be A OK & I definately would NOT be using hot water to soften it up
Reason I say this is simply heat expands things then cold contracts keep doing that & you'll crack even rubber used to make the impellor add to that that the rubber is bonded to a bush & you risk damaging that bond -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

Yep Yep
Only way you can really check an impellor is to pull it out & do a visual inspection checking for cracks -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

Boris. One thing I would suggest , if the engine hasn't been started for 12 months or more, well a couple of things,
Get a can of carby clean, take the plugs out and the air cleaner/filter off, open and jam the throttles fully open, and with a good battery connected, crank it over while squirting the carby cleaner down the throats of the carbys. Use about 1/2 a can of the stuff. Before cranking it over spray heaps of WD40/RP7 etc down each bore from the plug holes, use heaps, and even spray some more while the engine is cranking over. The engine will turn at a brisk pace with the plugs out, and the wd40 will loosen the piston rings and lubricate and clean any rust out of the bores. If you do this you will increase the reliability of the engine. This post has been edited by nimrod: Apr 9 2008, 08:06 PM -------------------- Frank

well Frank, it's a bit too late, hehe
I came home, connect the battery, put some fresh fuel and I get it started after a few tries... Now another problem... The water pump, looks lile its working, plenty of water with good pressure, but the water... its one second hot then it cools down the other second then it gets hot again and again.... What could be the problem? thanks This post has been edited by boris: Apr 9 2008, 09:48 PM -------------------- Boris

As long as the long term, the motor doesn't get too hot that you can't rest your elbow on it for a couple of seconds, at the side or top of the cowling, or too hot to touch with fingers on the side plate when the cowling is off. -------------------- Frank

mmmm... but it did give me a alarm sound or buzz... ??? Hmmmmmmmm Alarm bell not good @ all When you put it gear you would've droped the revs hence the QUOTE water stopped for a split second, came back again, and again and again... Now thermostat ??? Hmmmmmmmmm again It should not have any relevance to the alarm going off what I would do is pull out the thermostat then run motor again & get back to the thread -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

Boris. ring the guy who's number is on the cowling and ask him does he have any records as to what work he has done on the motor.
You may have to pay him a search fee but he may be able to tell you a few things about the engine. -------------------- Frank

how do i do that? Mate I used to own a pair of those Enenrudes in a bigger HP many years ago if it was a Yammy I'd be able to tell you right away where the cover to the thermostat was but it's been to long since I've looked @ a Evinrude. Anyway shop be fairly simple to find & prob only 2 maybe 3 bolts holding the cover on look up high on the motor for it, being a V 4 good guess is @ rear of motor -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

Boris,
Are you using dolphin ears or is the lower leg in a drum of water? If dolphin ears you have the water turned up? Hate to think you were starving it of water. Try turning the tap on full pressure. This will help eliminate the thermostat if you have a worn/cracked/deformed impellor. I do agree with Poly, changing the impellor would give you peace of mind but just checking it carefully also would help. You just do not know the history of the impellor, somebody could have started and ran the engine dry. I assume you know how to check an impellor, if not I am sure you will ask. -------------------- Don't tell anybody but my name is Fushin Freddie

mate can u put up some photos of the motor with the cowl off, the thing i am worried about is the boat looks very neglected, nothing that can't be put wright of course, its just that when one part is neglected u can bet the rest is as well, just how extensive was the rebuild, do u know????????????????

That is strange. So the motor would have good water pressure for say 5 minutes of idling and a 2000rpm short rev. (Or is it only idling??) Then you put it into gear and say rev it to 1500 and the water pressure pluses. (Or is it only idling??) If only idling what happens it you increase the revs a little? My guess is a water impellor more than the thermostat, but need more info. Didn't you say you bought it from a mechanic? Is he known to you, your mechanic? Good place to start asking WHY is this happening tomorrow as you have said? -------------------- Don't tell anybody but my name is Fushin Freddie

My car mechanic and i are using the same outboard mechanic. I know the both mechanics very well. The engine is rebuilt in 2007. its a 1986 model. QUOTE mate can u put up some photos of the motor with the cowl off Polly, inside of the outboard looks like its brand new, I'll take some pic tomorrow morning. I'll go to the outboard mechanic tomorrow morning, i spoke to him today he said should be the impeller. As you guys said i'd change the impeller anyway. I think i'll have some time tomorrow and change the impeller. The boat is not that bad as seen in the pic. It just need some tidying. but it is really really dirty. -------------------- Boris

Impeller needs to be changed but he was su busy so i'll change it. other than that its all good. It had a rebuilt early last year. So impeller is due to change anyway. If i can change the impeller by then, i'll put it on the water on monday. I'll put some more photos -------------------- Boris

My guess 1) Impeller was not changed when rebuilt 12 months ago 2) If definitely replace 12 months ago somebody ran the motor dry 3) Cheap impeller that has some of its fins/blades deformed because it has not been used My Mercrusier is 10 years old, only gets used over Christmas and has never had an impeller changed. of course it is possible to get a new part that is faulty from the start but as j.g. said i think i would be checking the thermostat as well ![]() ![]() ![]() The water pump, looks lile its working, plenty of water with good pressure, but the water... its one second hot then it cools down the other second then it gets hot again and again.... the more i think about it i would say it is the thermostat or a blockage of some sort just how hot dose the water get??????? -------------------- bugger it's sold, got meself a house instead

ok guys,
Because i coldnt be bothered to do it myself (working hard nowadays) i decided to take it to my mates mechanic (mine is busy for the next 2 weeks!!!!! what the...) Anyway i thought it might be a good idea because i wanted the motor checked by another mechanic. The water pump and thermostad are changed and the gearbox oil. The mechanic said the motor is in top condition. He thinks the motor looks like its been hardly ever used. So yeah... its all good... Now its time to start working on the boat... to do list... Cleaning Put the second swiwel seat Live bait tank. I want to use one of underfloor areas as a live bait tank. Cutting board. Over the transom. Under floor fuel tank, rocket louncher Carpeting The fun starts.... This post has been edited by boris: Apr 14 2008, 02:51 AM -------------------- Boris

My reply on the impeller was based on Boris' mechanic saying after he looked at it that it needs a new impeller. Water getting hot - "but the water... its one second hot then it cools down the other second then it gets hot again and again..." Yes that is the thermostat but he did not state how hot is hot and he did not get an alarm/buzzer and I assumed the buzzer was working when he started the motor. QUOTE Boris we get half the info and now we will never know what caused the problem.o B ok the impellar was faulty, so probably the prev owner dry started the motor. That was the cause of "water stops when you put it in gear" But also thermostad was faulty causing water beeing too hot. QUOTE Water getting hot - "but the water... its one second hot then it cools down the other second then it gets hot again and again..." Yes that is the thermostat but he did not state how hot is hot and he did not get an alarm/buzzer and I assumed the buzzer was working when he started the motor the alarm buzzer came of after leaving the motor on idle for 5 mins or so... -------------------- Boris

Think so Freddy & whilst you're there take some notes on how to read all reply's written in these sorts of threads ![]() Think I gave a very good possibility as to why the water pressure dropped when boris said he put the motor into gear in one of my early reply's. Think the prob most people make in these sorts of threads is they base their reply's on the original Q asked & dont stop to look @ any other possibilities. Very hard for an impellor to just shat itself unless of course you have a fuel blockage ![]() ![]() ![]() Now where's Fed to comment on that one ??? ![]() Ok, in his absence..... You have a condensation problem in your fuel, just ask jumpy how to fix this. He has this problem all the time Happy jumpy? ![]() Jack -------------------- ![]() |

QUOTE Jumpy, I agree with you why the water presure drops when placed in gear and I agree hard for a 12 month old impeller to shat itself. My reply on the impeller was based on Boris' mechanic saying after he looked at it that it needs a new impeller. I think you made that up Freddy ![]() ![]() The Mechanic didn't even get to look @ it till well after you made that initial comment that I quoted you on & if I recall Jumpus was the one who said it could be a faulty thermo. No where in this thread does it say that & let me tell you how dumb some of these mechanics can be I'll bet my short & curly's that the reason thermo & impellor were changed by the mechanic was because boris brought it to their attention & yes if a mechanic has gone to the trouble of pulling out the old impellor then it would be silly not to replace it. -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

hey,
I put the boat on the water yesterday. The motor and the boat are above my expectations. I am really happy with them. but i should consider a hydrolic steering... the steering was a bit heavy. -------------------- Boris

Hydraulic steering is great.
Just a suggestion set it up and start using it first, you may find other expensive things you want first but one day hydraulic steering will make it to the top of the list. -------------------- Don't tell anybody but my name is Fushin Freddie

Hello guys,
Not too much done after that. Added a second seat, a large bait board, rod holders etc. I've been using the boat a lot till 3 month ago. Yes its been 3 month ago last time i used it and i have around 30 lt of fuel in the tanks. The question is how do I dispose this old fuel. Or is there a way to use it? Thanks -------------------- Boris

To bad tanks aren't bigger else I would've said just leave old fuel in there & top it up with fresh fuel to top up the octane level.
Fuel is still good even after 6 months but loses it's octane level so it dosn't fire as well in the pistons. Just pour old fuel into the car done that many a time -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

Fuel is still good even after 6 months but loses it's octane level so it dosn't fire as well in the pistons. Just pour old fuel into the car done that many a time I have personally used 5 month old petrol before w/o any problems, but I had topped up the tank and stored it in my garage. Having said this. I do not go out wide but stay close to shore in nicely protected waters where the problems with engine trouble (due to bad fuel) would be fairly limited. to get rid of the old fuel, maybe use it for lawn mower/whipper snipper and whatever other small petrol engine tools you have -------------------- ![]() |

At 3 Months I'd use it, send it to me, send it to me!
Balance off the tanks so they are roughly equal then top them up with fresh premix & go fishing Boris. -------------------- ![]() SEAFARER: Fine as a Fairy's Fart |

Jack your motor dosn't know if ewe're out wide or in close it still runs the same ![]() Nothing wrong with 3 month old fuel & if it were to give ewe probs, those probs would arise when ewe 1st started the donk up not when ewe're allready used 1/2 the tank reason being any crap in the fuel sits on bottom of tank & that's the 1st lot of fuel that goes to the motor. -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |

But a general question, how do you dispose petrol any way??? There are Co's that collect old oil/fuel & it gets recycles Not going to come to your place for 20 litres ![]() Most garages/motor mechs keep big drums they pour petroleum products into I'd ask them if ewe can pour into the drums Pretty sure there's wun in Redfern ![]() ![]() -------------------- ![]() Save The Fish, Eat a Pussy |
