Put it on Ebay. Even with it's problem you will still get a couple of hundred for it.

Wouldn't think you could get a new prop shaft for that motor.

Forget it for that price you can get a relatively new 2nd hand motor

POLY/Jason, these motors are Chinese made, they are made in the casting moulds of the Original Yamaha Outboards, and made to Yamaha specs, all parts are interchangable with Yamaha parts.

Poly, I have heard only good about them, word is that they are as reliable as the Japanese made units, they are built to the same Blueprints using the same dies and methods.

They have been on the Australian market for a while first as SAIL then Osprey, And Parsun No doubt they are also selling under a few other names as Australian Importers can get the factory to produce them under their own label if they order a 40ft container load at a time.

CHECK OUT THE PRICE

Model: F25BM
Brand: PARSUN
Origin: Made In China
Category: Industrial Supplies / Fishery Machine
Keywords: outboards , outboard engine , outboard motor
Price: USD $ 1 / pc

Min. Order: 10 pc

Sail Outboard motor Review

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have seen and used some sail outboards 15hp and 40hp and have giving them a good trial, they seem to go well and also know the maunfacture and have visited them and continuosly follow the progress of the sail outboards and can get them for people if they want,
From our experience with using them and exploring them the quality is good and would compare it to a Tohatsu in earlier days,
The main let down I could see they had cheapened the Pull start sytem which needs improvement, also some of the plastics in fuel sytem are not so great,
As far as the tank and hoses goes its the same fittings, theres no electric start or tilts which is a hassle, and no electric starts at all yet that we are aware of,
Mercury make alot of there motors in China so these may becoming availble shortly,
With the right to the yamaha design it is old yamaha motors that they have replicated but not 100% they may have started with old molds for casting or they have replicated them and the factorie has no problems from yamaha we are aware of and the factorie also says they have every right to sell this technology.

There also has not been any contact from yamaha to any of the resellers that we are aware of,

I would welcome any news about this subject, especially for the parsun outboards and sail outboard, if you want more information on the sail outboards or Parsun outboards or the Star diesel outboards, see www.sailoutbaords.co.nz or www.outboards.cn which has all the petrol and diesel outboards currently available from China.

As far as we know from a Chinese Associate the parsun outboards are better quality and I have seen them to touch but havnt tested them yet,
The Parsun outboards Manufacture is a off shoot of the Sail outboards as the management had a split early in the piece,

The Parsun 4 strokes outbaords which are available in sizes from 2.5hp up to 15hp, There is a 25hp 4 stroke also becoming availble in June,

the Outboards are tank tested for 500hrs before they are released for sale,

I have some 40hp and 15hp sail outboard samples to test and view in Auckland. call 64 (0)21 2022193 ask for Stephen
views.

Drive Manufacturer Who Actually Builds the Drives
Bombardier/OMC
Johnson and Evinrude Under both builders, from the powerhead down, the major differences in Johnson and Evinrude are the cowls and paint color.
Until 2006, Suzuki manufactured the Johnson four strokes up to 225 HP.

For 2006 Suzuki only makes the Johnson four strokes up through 30 HP, Evinrude produces direct injected two strokes (E-Tec) 40 HP and above.

Nissan Nissan outboards are built by Tohatsu
Honda Long ago, some Honda three cylinder powerheads were mounted on Mercury drive legs and props. For the last several years, Honda has built its full line of outboards.
Mercury Marine 2006 model Mercury four strokes from 2.5 through 30 HP are built by Tohatsu.
Before Yamaha entered the U.S. market, Mercury's Mariner line was built by Yamaha.

Last year (2005), Mercury four stroke powerheads from 25 through 225 HP (except the Verados) were built by Yamaha. Several of those models used Mercury drive legs, electronics and EFI systems (replacing carbs Yamaha used in similar sized engines).

In 2006 models, Mercury four stroke powerheads from 40 to 225 HP (except the Verados) are built by Yamaha.

Mercury's agreement with Yamaha ended in March 2006, at which time Mercury is expected to phase in more four cylinders (75 to 115 HP) based on the Verado engine block, but without supercharging or intercooling.

Are the warranties transferable?
I have a suspicion they are not.

Agree with buying a name brand though, as you have proven spare parts are expensive and who knows if you will be able to get parts for a new comer in a few years.

Steer clear from the non proven brands.

Wait till you've got the money to buy the real thing, nothing like owning new then it's up to you as to how well you treat it & lasts.

I never bother reading reviews main reason being I'd most likely get cranky reading what was written & of course the good reviews will say El Cheapo motors are good they're trying to sell you one.

Buying a motor is not the same as say buying a fishing reel big deal reel craps itself then you're out of pocket a few hundred $$'s @ worst case senario.

ps] If I were you I'd get myself a pair of 6 hp oars till you're ready for the motor laugh.gif laugh.gif

I was reading SUMO's comments early in the thread where one of the motors suggested cant recall which one.

Anyways motor can take geniune Yamaha parts.

Here's something for you to think about.

If the El Cheapo motor keeps breaking down down the track after the warrantee has expired.

If it's a problem motor then what you'll pay for the Yamaha geniune parts ???? outweighs any initial savings that you may have had , not to mention the frustration.

Take my word for it the quality of original parts would be poor so they will break down.

That merc lasted 30 years B4 it shat itself somehow dont think those cheapies will go anywhere new that.

Daniel you wouldn't bother & best off just getting a new gearbox [2nd hand of course] if the prop is sliping then there's a good chance the gears are on the ratchet side.

Anyways good news my back has come GooDarus but I'm burning up with a fever so I'm off to bed C Ya's Ron

Hmmmmmmmm well it was just a thought that i had regarding the motor, as i said, i new nothing about them and it has made for some good reading so far, lets take J.G. example of the reel, at this moment the site is running a comp to win a reel from viva Chinese made i would think, now there is no way that j.g. would put up crap for the members to try for so it stands to reason that the quality control in the factory were they are made is very good, the so called name brands have there reel made in Chinese factory's, there is also large numbers of car parts coming out of China now as well, so why is it that they could not have a reasonable outboard made there.

Hmmmm well just thinking out loud, we must all get what will suit us best, and jas if u got 30 years out of the old merc i would be looking at getting an other one. dry.gif dry.gif dry.gif

poly virtually all the reels on the market today are made in China dosen't matter what brand they are.

I put up one of the better models as the prize but let me tell you geez there are some crap about as well, I threw out box's of those.

Some had very poor alloy in the gear casting & they would snap even though they were new.

What you have to remember these manufacturer's no matter who they are cater for a wide scope of the market & the biggest portion of the market is for those who dont want to spent the $$'s & prefer to buy cheap.

Same goes with these cheap chinese motors even though wages are around $200 per month in china these guys would be shimming on the quality control aspect of these El Cheapo outboards & the difference is you'd be out on the water if & when they broke down & thats not a pleasant thought.

Esp in jason's case with 3 young daughters to worry about.

Let me ask you a Q poly ????

Why didn't you buy one instead of the Yammy ????????????????

i got me new old motors ,,they look a bit rugged ,but 1 has a good engine and a shitty cowl and broken handle ,and 1 has a seized engine ,the rings are seized but the rest of it is great ,so ill swap the engines and replace the water pump impellor and she should be right ,oh and a coat of paint ,,they are 8hp ,,,,,,the 10hp looks god but it has a hole each side of the leg above the gearbox ,a fairly big hole ,that wont be hard to fix ,,the engine feels good too,so i may end up with 2 out of 3 ,so im happy with that ,,not bad for $51 hey ,,,,,

yeah ill get some piccies morrow ,,,i done a search on the model no and ,1 8hp is a 71",the other is a 75"thats the one thats seized ,and the 10 is a 68" 69",but i cant notice anything bad on them except for the holes in the side of the 10hp but with a bit of sikaflex that problem may be solved ,,,,,were still waiting on tamworth bloody chainsaw and mower specialist about the rings for me hanimex ,,but even though if i cant get any i can take a bit off the head and get a bit more compression ,,but she still goes anywho ,,,,whats wrong with a motor that can take piccies jump wasnt that long ago we had mobile phones that did it ,,,aw wait they still do ,,,,haahahahh,,saves carrying a camera about ,,,just face the motor and smile ,,,,

Jas there is some goo called cemeweld that we used to fix the holes in the rocker covers on B.M.W. MOTOR BIKES and it worked a treat, i am not sure of the spelling so cem-e-weld.
when this stuff drys out u can drill it, tap it, and thread it, just like alloy, how long it would last in salt water i have no idea :o :o :o

jump the 10hp ,above the gearbox and the top cowl the houseing has corroded threw ,it dont worry me much cause the water gets into there anyway with older motors so ill just fill em and tidy them up ,,,,that s if the rest is ok first ,,,,,

Devcon Job jas

Was using the stuff 30 years ago on aircraft .

Have also used it for exactly what you need to do.

It a 2 pack equal mix sets hard & is alot harder to sand/file back than car bog sticks like shit to a blanket

Prob best bet is to go into an auto accessories place & ask for it & read directions & what it can do

Better still just dug up their web site

ps] you can get it in small packs but it's not cheap

see if this works this is the 10hp ,the second one is whats left of the 8hp that has a good motor ,,the third one is in the workshop, everything is great on it except the rings are seized ,,,,but im gonna look at it after i get the first one goin ,,the good 8hp looks like it may of been rebuilt a few years ago the bore is great and no move ment in the piston or rings ,and all the water galleries are spotless ,,,so keeping fingers crossed
