No - it isn't what you are imagining!!!. When someone builds a radio control aircraft, and deviates from the plans or changes something, it is called 'Kit Bashing', so I want to change something on a fishing rod .....

The butt on one of my graphites is fairly short, and doesn't fit into the rod holder. I want to extend it by a few inches. JG is the logical one to advise me here.

What do I need? Do I cut the cork off the butt and sleeve it with a piece of glass or graphite tube and reglue cork or hypalon onto it? Where do I get the material?

It's a bit rough but you could get some thin guage alloy tube the right size to shove up the blank, bepending on the taper you would have to build up the verien degree of thickness with masking tape. Alloy would add weight to the lower end of the rod though, but would be stronger for sitting in the rod holder.

File out the butt & add a sleeve

If you're clever enough you can make it so the extention piece is detachable

Like I said you need 2B a bit clever if you want extension to be detachable

Something like a feral used on 2 piece rods would do the trick

KK, I did exactly what Frank recommends on a beach rod that was a bit short in the butt, it worked a treat-I got the longer grip from Clark Rubber and the end cap from Bunnings....It worked a treat.....

I am going to give you another perspective.

Why not get an extension in the rod holder. Get a tube and cut out a slot for the reel handle to fit in. That way you do not have to change the action of the rod.

Klaus, just keep the spin rod as is... Buy a bait rod from jumpy (auctions) The $60 - $80 big ones you pay is nothing compared to the running around fish.gif

I may be wrong Christos but when I extended my beach rod the extension I inserted didn't come past the reel seat and I believe has had no effect on the rods action.......I'v not seen KK's rod but would expect his extension would be the same scenario-not past the reel seat therefore no change in action! fish.gif

I am trying to picture what you did but I must admit that I am not doing too well.

I am thinking that you added to the thickness and not the lenght of the rod or you have added to the lenght to the rod from the reel seat to the first runner?

Christos, I'll explain in simple steps

1: I got some alloy tubing, araldite, grip and masking tape
2: remove the butt cap
3: Cut alloy tube to required length to fit into rod with extension sticking out.
4: put masking tape onto alloy to make it fit nice and snug
5: Mix araldite and put it on masking taped extension and insert into rod.
6: Allow to dry
7: Use masking tape to thicken extension
8: Put grip on extension-I used quick grip glue to stick it in place.
9: Replace butt cap
10: Go catch some fish with your freshly bashed rod!

Christos. This is the type of rod holder, into which the rod must sit. As you can see, the butt needs to be long enough to hook under the rear arch. Mine is not.

Why dont you cut a bit out of one of the s/s holders and reweld it. leave the others for bigger rods.

Looking at the photo gives a better understanding of the rod holder. I did have this in mind on the last post.

Now that another person has mention it by cutting off a piece and welding. I have another a similar idea.

Why not attach sometime that can slide back and forth so that you do not cut off the rod holder and have to re-weld?

I am not a very good drawer and so I can not give you a drawing so I will describe. Flat piece of wood with two groves to support the bar. Another piece of wood cut into a semi circle above the bar. Drill two holes to attach one piece of wood to another with bolts and washer and wing nuts.

I was tossing up whether to buy a cheap telscopic rod off ebay, and cut a 6" piece out of it for the butt extention. We have a council street cleanup next week, and as I was driving along today, my wife said, "there's a fishing rod in that pile". I drove to the shops and stopped on the way back home to have a look. It was a brand new, unused telescopic rod with the tag still on it. Took it home and sawed off what I needed. GREAT biggrin.gif. Now just have to get some cork, glue it and shape it. Presto, all done.

O.K. all done. (almost all done. Just have to paint on some finishing epoxy on the glass bits)

Cut a little bit of cork off the original butt. Didn't need to, in hindsight.

This is a piece off an old rod. Council cleanups can be a source of materials if you look around.

This insert is glued into the rod and the extension piece with epoxy glue.

The masking tape is used to build up the insert for a nice fit.

Just have to paint a bit of epoxy onto the glass, glue the butt cap on and then put some heatshrink over the cork. Voilla!!

Thanks for the advice and help JG.

Honestly kk I cant believe how silly you are & you remind me alot of my old man laugh.gif laugh.gif

Why on earth did you lacquer over the cork for ???

Only a Brurry Irriot would do such a thing laugh.gif

Not going to go into why not to you go figure it out since you concocted that brain explosion, from your original pics thought the rod still had plastic on the foregrip but now know you lacquered it as well.

Like I said you remind me of all the $$#@%$127 things my old man would do must be your generation I guess laugh.gif laugh.gif

Vot you talkingk!!!. No laquer you old fool. The foregrip has plastic on it - as purchased. The extension cork has ....... plastic on it, same as the foregrip. Put your magnifying glasses on and have a look at the plastic on the butt cap, where I trimmed it.

Fair dinkum!!! You remind me of all the middle aged whipper snappers of your generation. Plastic, plastic, plastic. Look again.

Beg your pardon kk ??? laugh.gif laugh.gif

Go back to the sequence of shots that you posted the 2nd one in particular

The one that you said you found in a council cleanup but it was the piece that I machined up for you & it never had plastic on it when I gave it to you did it ????????

I said that originally I thought your rod still had plastic on it but after reading poly's comment where he told you to epoxy it

Well thats what I assumed you had done I looked @ the 2nd pic not the 1st.

Either way that extention never had plastic on it & for the life of me I cant understand why on earth you proceeded to coat it with plasic.

Only thing I can think of is that you're trading your tinny in for a polycraft laugh.gif laugh.gif

It says, 'This is a piece of an old rod. Then we have a full stop and a new sentence, letting scavengers know that a council cleanup is a good place to find such things.' The piece in the photo was what you kindly machined up for me. Thats why I said a big thank you at the end of that post. biggrin.gif

I put plastic on it, to protect it. For no other reason. Same as the foregrip.

Only thing I can think of is that you're trading your tinny in for a polycraft laugh.gif laugh.gif
I took my small tinny to a Polycraft dealer to get a trade in offer. He offered me four Polys for it. Not enough, I said.

Took this nice rod out for a spin today. Casts the little Rebel popper a long way and as for plastics .... it is great. Only one thing bugged me today. as I was rigging the rod, I noticed some ceramic missing from the stripper guide. I bypassed it, but had to by a new Fuji on the way home. Now I don't have any black binding thread furious.gif
Didn't get a hit on the poppers, but hooked a small whiting on a little black and gold shad. Got to get out in the boat I think. Got three spots lined up in the Port, where I have caught very big whiting on nippers. Wonder if they will like lures.
