Fishing oz style _ Fresh Water Chat _ Downrigger Bombs

Posted by: nimrod Mar 21 2011, 10:42 PM

I am heading up to lake StClair next week for 5 days, the bass comp will be on that week end and over 50 boats entered as well as all the non boaters so looks like I will have plenty of company laugh.gif laugh.gif .
I have been told the fish are deep so looks like downrigging will be the way to get results.
My bomb is a heavy salt water one and I may have to make a couple of lighter ones for the fresh water impoundement, been told the fish are between 10-20 metres so only need light bombs.
Question is How lioght should I go, 1,2,3 lb ? what would you blokes reccommend ?.
My exhisting bomb is around 8lb. Also is there any advantage in making the bombs fish or cigar shaped instead of round. I have to decide pretty quick so I can get busy and make the moulds, so any help would be appreciated.

Struth thems not bloody big wittle fishys, Dems is bloody big whales laugh.gif laugh.gif

Think peeps get a wee bit to technical with bombs, they're a weight to get your lure/bait down to where the fishy's are nothing more.

Not that i do any fresh water fishing truth be known i haven't got any gear capable of ketching a 10-20 metre long fishy laugh.gif

Gather you'll be downrigging lures Frank ??? that means you'll be moving @ speed even your 8lb bomb will want to start rising to the surface cant see how a smaller bomb will be of any advantage.

Just ask Bees he goes D/rigging with no bomb laugh.gif laugh.gif

I was going to answer along "Think peeps get a wee bit to technical with bombs, they're a weight to get your lure/bait down to where the fishy's are nothing more." those lines but didn't want to show my ignorance on the subject of downrigging. JG's quote says it all though.

Had this wally giving a lecture on downrigging @ the club wun night, thought I better behave myself since he was an invited guest speaker
Didn't mean i wasn't sitting down the back with a few of the boys pissing ourselves laughing @ the crap he was spining laugh.gif

2 & 4lb bombs etc Frank gather you're going to be using Nimrod 2000 Dowrigger

If runing lures allow for the depth the lure will be diving @ if it's a bibbed diver
If you're marking the fish on the sounder & not getting strikes run the lure further back on the release clip I'm no freshwater fisho
But that's what i do on the girls when i can see them on the sounder & they're not on the chew

Decided to cash those unsigned coupons in,, no more freeby's for me for the rest of the year mad.gif mad.gif .
Danialsun I got the Canon laketroll manual. I don't do a lot of downrigging, so just got a cheapie.
If you are going to use it a lot for many years I would suggest you save a few more $$$$ and wait till you can buy a good one that is going to last you a while. All they are is a means of holding a weight at a certain depth so it's silly spending a terrible lot of money on one ( unless you're at it all the time ) but also no point in getting crap that is going to fall apart after a couple of years.
Same old same old mate,,, buy the best you can afford,, but don't buy cheap just for the fact that it's cheap.

The last bomb I used for fishing was a yellow coloured one wrapped in a greaseproof paper, that sucker went off like a McAle's Navy depth charge. Lucky I wasn't thrown in jail because unknown to me at the time I set it off directly opposite the Sans Souci water police station. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

They look good mate, the Scottys here retail for around 300 so maybe there half decent ? i'll do a bit of shopping around

Twit Top save a few more penny's, get a paper run or maybe Fed will pay ewe to polish his shiny head laugh.gif laugh.gif

And go for the 1085 a much better option

Posted by: quintrex101 Mar 24 2011, 02:57 AM

Alright will do, what's the different mate ?

Posted by: Jumpus GooDarus Mar 24 2011, 03:19 AM

May know of one or 2 lying around never used & with bomb [bombs aren't included when buying D/Rigger]

1085 is virtually like my electric models minus telescopic arm

1050's slide into there mounting bracket & you have only wun position, the 1085 has the high mount swivel base 12 positions from memory

$300 will prob get you 1085

Dont bother trying to look for it OS prob wont find it they use different model no's in canada & can be misleading

Posted by: quintrex101 Mar 24 2011, 09:25 PM

That does sound better, will look into it

Where would you mount it mate ? the back corner i was thinking ?

Posted by: Jumpus GooDarus Mar 24 2011, 11:02 PM

On top of the canopy looks good mount it in the centre & you troll either side hysterical.gif hysterical.gif

If i'm out on my own I use port side mount so i dont have to keep turning my head

Doubt ewe'll be fishing solo then starbord side prob the better option 2 reasons

Sounder will show bomb depth as long as you're not racing around
Easier for skipper to keep an eye on bomb when turning boat

Posted by: quintrex101 Mar 25 2011, 02:55 AM

Looked around and found the 1085 to be $400 + here :O

Can get one from America for 200 + 100 postage, not sure what to do
