OK, I'v read enough bout these reels, who owns one and whats your thoughts/experiences with them.....Yeah I'm sure theres bigger and better to purchase but I'm interested in reels offering similar bang for under 200 bucks, lever drag, prefer no level wind with similar spec's to the TLD!

Cheers
Jason

Mate my favorite rod n reel combo is my tld 25 spooled up with jack erskine igfa pre test 10kg line on a custom 8-10kg stick (pacific composite). thats the one all my tuna off jumpys boat has caught heaps of fish ive had it for about 6-7 years and is the best if u wanna come and have a look at my setup ur more than welcome.

what line class do u want to run it in ??

Suppose they're allright I do have one but I only use it on my ^kg game stick.

If you're gonna use i9t to wrap 15 kg or over on the spool I'd rethink that option & wait till you get some more $$'s & buy yourself something much better.

for a little more money you can get the torus... metal bodied TLD... I think that they probably a better option.. For similar money you can also get the torium, which is start drag, but spose to be a great reel..

the tld's are ok but i think u would be better off spending a bit more money biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
as the old saying go's, you only get what you pay for dry.gif dry.gif dry.gif

Poly I did ask for any alternative-similar reels not just a suggestion to spend more money! What would you recommend-I'm open to any and all options from anyone who has a reel they're more than happy to recommend-but bear in mind I don't have a huge budget!

Was thinking of putting 15kg on it......From your posts I guess 10kg would be better-what line would be best???.....I will be using the reel for bottom bashing and a bit of tuna chasing!

Only suggest these cause i have seen and played with them... Can pick them up reasonably priced on ebay on on sal in shops.. Dont know much about other brands in this style but i beleive the Daiwa sealine range have some similar good reels?

okuma is one to stay well clear of, and yes Rumpus is right about the Daiwa all though i think torus is a better reel.

as for line class 10kg max for the bottom as for chaseing tuna i think you may need to be looking at a much better reel smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

Ive got my Tiagra (I know jumpy i know! ;) ) its got about 800m? of 10kg on it and thts what ill be using for chasing tuna if i make it out that far ever....

How deep do you want to bottom bounce?? and what species??

Ive also got a pen 320LD (similar to charter special) which i have loaded up with 300m of 15kg mono... It aint the best reel, but is easy to use (has lever drag and level wind, graphite frame) and would suit bottom bashing juist fine depending on what you are after? Only thing is i never use it cause im always using the lighter gear.. I Spose if i was out in 50m of water and had to drop a bait to the bottom it would come in handy...

Jason. The TLD 25 will be OK for what you want it for, bottom bashing and the odd Tuna trip.
I had 2 of them before my shed got done over, and used them for tuna with quiet a bit of success.
I would be sticking with the idea of 15 kg line as well.
Sure there are better and bigger reels about, but where do you start and where do you stop.
My mate down bermi still uses one for the bottom and he has 24kg on it. Just skull drags the fish off the bottom.
Good when we get into water over 100 fathems, then he out fishes me 3 to 1 as I get too lazy to bring up the 1 kilo lead to re bait.
I am looking for a large alvey deck winch, for this job.

Wasn't one of your earlier reports about loosing all sorts of fish because of gear failing??

I unfortunately could not keep it together, 1stly my lures did not attract anything worth keeping even though they were the same as the guys catching fish, then the insides of my reel decided they didnt like where they were and exploded while battling a 1.6m shark, i managed to land him and after a few hours of work i managed to rebuild the reel into a working order. The final failure was the roller in the tip of my rod fell out! why meeee what did i do so wrong!

nope that was the reel before i purchased the TLD25 as a replacement

Well I bought one...,.,..,,.It won't be used as much as my other lighter combo's so I'm sure it will do a great job for what I want! I remember the posts you put up on SFF Pirate-wasn't it a shakespeare ugly boat combo you had....I'v got the same and the anti reverse has failed-I'v played with it and it still has trouble doing its thing...Thankfully I didn't have issues with it when onto a fair fish!

Anyways what have you caught on your 25 since you bought it Pirate????

I did the same trip as the shakesphere explosion trip Broome - Rowley shoals and the TLD25 replacement stood up to 1 smaller sail fish , couple of dog tooth tuna and a nice Spanish mackerel (i didn't post a report as we caught less fish and has less excitement than the previous trip). Ive been very happy so far with its performance. Next trip is out of Darwin so ill take it with me again.
