Do we have a forum android expert here?

Posted by: kkw Dec 19 2013, 12:36 PM

I had an Android once, or was that an asteroid? Very painful to sit down. Dr told me to buy some preparation H and rub it on. Worked - it hasn't returned.

why what is the problem

He's wearing a hat & the sun give solar power to his head

Posted by: Spudly Dec 19 2013, 10:46 PM

I know a bit mate but what are you after?

Posted by: Fed Dec 19 2013, 11:10 PM

The problem is with my nexus7.

It wants to update from jellybean to kitkat which is fine but my stupid optus carrier drops out before it fully updates and the cycle repeats itself over & over.

So far this month it's used nearly 7 GBs of data trying to update so I've had to turn the nexus wifi off until I can get it to update through a better carrier.

What I'd like to do is temporarily turn off the auto system updates so I can turn the wifi back on and use the nexus on the net until Jan when my isp gives me a fresh data quota.

In udder words grow your head hysterical.gif

Posted by: oz man Dec 20 2013, 05:09 PM

3 easy steps
1. Install free System Tuner
2.Go to Startups
3.Select Google Services Framework
4. Uncheck SystemUpdateInstallDialog and SystemUpdateInstallDownloadDialog - picture indicate 3 unchecked - use the only 2 I mentioned in the instruction.

Moving right along... (I don't want to root the OS)

Downloading anything at the moment is out of the question because as soon as I turn on the wifi it starts downloading the system update.

Do you think the advice from androidcentral was to just remove the notification or was it to completely stop the auto download?

At the moment I don't get an option to refuse the upgrade, it just wants to do it by itself.

Then there's the added problem of downloads failing to complete and that's why I'm looking for an alternate isp (telstra) to try & determine if it's an optus problem or not.
More often than not even normal app updates fail in the same way, it gets half the file then sits there like a stunned mullet until & give up & cancel out. Also noticed downloading large files to my desktop computer often does the same, normally it doesn't worry me because I only do a bit of internet surfing.

Have to check with the kids on Xmas day to see if any of them have a smart phone capable of creating a wifi hotspot and is using telstra, need some ammo to give my isp a blast.

Thanks Ozman if all else fails I may have to go down the side load track but right now I still prefer to let it do its own thing via a different isp.

It had the same problem trying to update Google Chrome then I tried it early one morning & it downloaded & installed in a flash.
Chrome didn't give me any high usage problems because it only advised there was an update available then gave me the choice to install it or not. Same with all the other apps.

Can't believe how hard it is to grab 200 MBs off someone, I'd normally flush 6 GBs away at the end of each billing cycle.

New question guys...

ADSL2+ Vs Optus 3G

Thoughts?

Posted by: oz man Dec 26 2013, 01:31 PM

All comes down to what you want it for.

adsl2+ for a set line is faster than 3g, where as 3g has the mobility as it is made for smartphones, tablets and laptops but can be used in a normal computer also.

Usually 3g is limited in the BW and download , where as the closer to the exchange the better adsl2+ is also it has bigger download limits .
The reason 3g /4g is limited is the simply cost of broadcasting and the amount of air space it uses as you can imagine the number of other products that use the air space.

Posted by: Fed Dec 26 2013, 03:05 PM

I know it's far from ideal but I'm thinking adsl might be better than my current 3g, home network only so no need for wireless.

Posted by: oz man Dec 26 2013, 08:54 PM

wow by far if your using it at home.

Have a look at westnet.com.au or iinet.com.au what ever you do don't say telstra .

Posted by: Fed Dec 26 2013, 11:23 PM

Not sure I understand Ozman, those figures I quoted are from checking my adsl connection availability.
Do you mean those figures are OK for adsl2+ ?

My current isp 'comcen' will give me 20GBs adsl2 for about $40 a Month.

Posted by: oz man Dec 31 2013, 04:45 PM

wow that is expensive http://www.westnet.com.au/internet/broadband/adsl/

100 gb = $29.95 with home phone or 50gb $39.95 with no extra

Posted by: Fed Jan 1 2014, 04:13 PM

I didn't want to bundle Ox, one day I'll get around to sorting it all out.
We only use about 5GBs a Month so extra data doesn't mean much to me.
Hardware and adsl will be sorted in 3-5 days, keeping same email addresses and ftp space.
I've been with comcen/spinnet for about 20 years, old habits you know.

Just hope the adsl lets the larger downloads complete, who knows I might become a download pirate. ;)

Posted by: Bees Knees Jan 2 2014, 12:09 AM

You only need that much GB if your addicted to porn... lol..

Posted by: Fed Jan 2 2014, 11:47 AM

That could be part of the problem Bees, them Russian chicks keep sending me naked selfies and they're freaking huge.

Posted by: oz man Jan 2 2014, 01:45 PM

lol I can give you up to 2TB of porno if you like.I use about 100gb of my bw per month but that is because my phone now is voip and cost me like $10.00 per month as all calls in Australia and overseas in select countries are free only pay for calls to mobiles and the number fee.I do all this thru cable.and my net phone
Cost $4.95 per month for up to 500 calls local or interstate etc. and $0.15m for mobile calls a big saving for me a Pams family is in Orange, Brisbane and Christchurch NZ. so all here calls are free

Posted by: Fed Jan 2 2014, 02:19 PM

I don't call anyone and no one calls me.

Posted by: Fed Jan 9 2014, 12:34 PM

All sorted Ozman adsl is so much faster than 3g, downloaded all the updates no worries.

Problem?
Incoming phone call knocked out the internet connection, thoughts?

Posted by: oz man Jan 9 2014, 01:29 PM

Well that is a problem as it shouldn't do that.

Posted by: Fed Jan 9 2014, 01:44 PM

A single line into the house with 3 phone sockets on it.
1st socket asdl modem.
2nd socket panasonic dect portable phone.
3rd socket telstra wall phone.

Thinking about putting 3 splitter/filter gizmos on.

Posted by: oz man Jan 9 2014, 05:41 PM

You have to have filters on all phones otherwise it will kill the adsl line and in most cases you think the adsl is not working.
As all adsl is a split of the line in the exchange to allow two signals to pass on 1 line.

If you want extra telephone go to whirlpool forum and get mynetphone voip cost $4.95 per month thru the forum and gives you 500 free phone calls anywhere all included in the $4.95, The only part you really pay for is calls to mobiles.

I love it as it cut my phone from $350 per quarter to just $10.00 to 15.00 per month = Max = $45.00 per quarter

Posted by: Fed Jan 9 2014, 06:26 PM

Thanks mate it looks like I need a wall phone filter & an inline filter.

Posted by: Spudly Jan 10 2014, 06:14 PM

Posted by: Fed Jan 11 2014, 03:35 PM

From what I can see Spud there's already a zillion spreadsheet apps at google play.

Posted by: Spudly Jan 11 2014, 11:43 PM

not after a spreadsheet, just a program where you can enter 2 numbers and it calculates it for you.. I have built a spreadsheet that does it but there are people who can convert that into a standalone app smile.gif

Posted by: Fed Jan 12 2014, 12:28 PM

http://www.spreadsheetconverter.com/use-excel-calculators-and-smart-forms-on-iphone-and-android/?pos=footer

Build powerful apps from Excel prototypes

Developing smartphone apps for Android and iPhone has never been this easy. Just create the table, calculator or form you want with Excel, then convert the spreadsheet into a calculating app for iPhone or Android.

Apart from the small screen on the smartphone, everything works just like in Excel. Use the formulas and functions you know and love, and format the layout just about any way you like.

Are you trying to hit the app jackpot? Good luck to you mate.

Jumpy ... did you really think you could get away with this comment?????

Update:
Put the filters in and now everything is perfect.

I must be getting old, the wall phone filter had me stumped at first until I realised the centre thing moved in & out. You could have warned me Oz.
