Fishing oz style _ Game Fishing _ Only Another Marlin Now With Pics

Posted by: alex Jan 29 2010, 03:26 PM

Well peep's

I have been on many boats and caught a few marlin before but never caught one off our own boat (ive been trying don't you worry) But everything finally came together and we finally got one a 82 kg marlin on 24kg line. down at the blue water classic in Bermagui mind u the 9 game boats that i was in amongst didn't have the same enthusiasm that i did hmmm wonder why ????

I dont like killing marlin but to make dad happy knocked him and i found out by Julian Pepperall that he was a he so i did not feel so bad once i found that out.

I had the biggest capture for day 2 of the tournament in the marlin category. but got bumped off on day 3 by a 141kg striped marlin on 15Kg to a junior and i do have to say well done i know rooster the skipper driving the boat and the junior did do it tough so well done !!! BTW its a NSW and AUSTRALIAN record !!!!! also dave casser off slammer lost a est 950 LB blue (his account) and from all other accounts of OTHER PEOPLE seeing the fish it was easily 800 + and that was saw by alot of people and alot of experienced fishermen !!!

GOT TO LOVE THE 12 MILE REEF !!!!

gentlemen of the forum,it is time for the definite debate for the rights and the wrongs of taking such beautiful animals. do we take them and weigh them as a dead mass on a hook or should we release these creatures and try,, with all honesty to estimate a weight and girth.

Paul

Posted by: Fed Jan 31 2010, 01:45 AM

It's a can of worms Poly, you could ask the same question about any fish.
I'll never keep another one but if someone wants to then I'm OK with that too.
I think most people want to keep their 1st one and after that they get over it anyway.

Posted by: Christos Jan 31 2010, 01:01 PM

Well done on the fishing.

I think you can start another thread of keeping or releasing fish.

Posted by: alex Jan 31 2010, 05:34 PM

Poly i eat marlin and quite like the meaty flesh that it has the fish did not get molded or wasted we ate it as food and it fed alot of people. these are not the easiest of fish to catch and we have been trying to catch one on lures on our boat for 4 years !! taking one a year per boat is still sustainable fishing as far as i am concerned whats not sustainable is when the whole south coast long line fleet turn our and wipe them all out !!

Posted by: Rumpus Jan 31 2010, 08:12 PM

I agree with ya there alex, taking 1 fish every now and then is ok, especially when its eaten..

Good catch mate!

There's no real right or wrong

It all falls down to the descretion of the angler, he or she caught the fish & it's really nobody else's buisness

No different to how peeps will take every brim, snapper, kungy etc etc they catch

I've killed my fair share of marlins in my time but refuse to do so these days & that's the no 1 rule on my boat, they all get released unless they come up dead, I may not catch as many these days prob because I refuse to troll live baits for them.

Live baits will result in more deaths cause the hook gets swallowed & generally embeds alot further down the fushy's gob, can also pierce a vital organ as was the case many many moons ago when a 1000lb'r was landed out of a 16 ft tinny.

Alex knows wot I'm like & how I like to pay out when peeps I know kill marlin esp after he posts a comment like this hysterical.gif

QUOTE

Well that comment deserved my shit stiring hysterical.gif

Wun thing I am happy about on my goats is that even sum wun who's never seen a marlins B4 is only to happy to release their 1st wun, it all comes down to the skipper on any boat, explain to the crew that it's A O K to release fish & they get hooked on the idea

Posted by: alex Feb 1 2010, 03:42 PM

Yeah its true i dont like killing them jump but at the end of the day its a fish. i take one which i wanted to tag but dad wanted to kill hmm greek blood but now were on a tag only policy unless it comes up dead !!

Hey ! hu's that old fart in the pic & Wi ewe wearing a Lowrance head cover for hysterical.gif

Magic colours on them stick heads esp when they light up in the water B4 they strike, now have a look @ it hanging up I'm sure that was a few hrs later & ewe can still see the stripes & silver underbelly.

Twas a turkey on another site sum time back trying to tell evllybloody he's caught a Blue, when indeed it was a Stripe, He got the Poo Poo's when I corrected him & refused to accept the fush was a Stripe.

Wun thing I've observed with Blue's is they'll fade to a dark grey virtually b4 your eyes wunce dead & ewe cant help thinking why did I kill it for

They are a beautiful fushy & think that's wot poly was on about when he said it's a shame to kill them

Posted by: alex Feb 1 2010, 11:27 PM

Thanks Mr X its been along time but im so glad it happed finally with dad wasn't he chuffed that we did it in the comp !!!

Jump
I know what u are talking about a junior record got taken and at first the guy on the fly bridge called it for a black around 400 pounds when they killed it was a striped at 141Kg so yeah but hey we all get excited !!!

The Lowrance hat was cause i was doing the give away buckets helping out and there were a few left over so one landed up as a new fishing hat !!! hehehe Funny i use koden sounders and i have every other manufactures apparel !! how stupid is koden !!

Well done Alex...that's a great catch there.... smile1.gif

I am of the opinion....any legal fish I catch which will be eaten fresh...then it comes home with me... smile1.gif
If it is not going to be eaten, then it goes back...but rest assured with such a large family they will always be eaten......just ask Christos.....

I have never eaten any game fish. Is Marlin good eating or not ??

hay Alex, i was not in any way trying to have a go at you for taking the marlin, what i was trying to get at was the idea of catch and release across the entire range of fishing.
like j.g. said if a fish comes up dead or gut hooked and you feel it will not live then by all means put it out of is pain and enjoy the meal. as for the rest I will take a photo and let them swim free.

p.s. what is humos

hmmm

interesting topic...

i dont think any social fisherman goes out with the intent of catching as many fish and keeping them as possible,

but when its comes to the wonderful godly marlin well i for 1 to say that well if i cought 1 id catch it.. take a piccy and then release it but thats for me
personally and im a very odd man..... hysterical.gif

but if the fisherman next to me decided to keep his marlin well thats his choice. his the 1 who caught it... but saying that if he went out every week and caught them and kept them for no other purpose other to brag and show off well then i would have to say something about it,

i say good on ya for the catch and if its your choice to keep well then thats your choice.. maybe just maybe as rec and social fishos we should spend our time and effort on the long liners and the damages they have...

Most peeps are only to happy to release them these days cause it's been drumed into the heads it's ok 2 do so

N0 it is definately not

Angler only turns the handle on the reel that's all & has got the least most important job on the boat, Marlin fishing is a team effort & it's the Skipper who gets to call whether the fish gets kept or released after all it's his boat.

I know of alot of anglers who've been told to gaff their fush cause that boat was fushing pointscore which I think is totally wrong

That's wun of the reasons I no longer belong to any club nor fish comps, whether those who belong to clubs etc know it or not the temptation to get their names up on the scoreboard allways factors into the equation & the fate of many a Marlins is determined by a trophy

g/day Jumpus,

Yeah Marlins are just wun of those species that if ewe put in the hrs & find the good water ewe'll be rewarded, & then there's those majic days where ewe find a good patch of water & lures aren't in the water more than 10 minutes B4 getting attacked

QUOTE

Dont think you've seen the new boat think ewe came out in my old Blue boat ??????

New boat is a weapon just under a meter longer than the old wun rides like a dream but yet to catch any decent fishys from it

I did go though a bad patch last season where I wasn't feeling to well so missed out on the marlin season but itching to get out there again just putting the Yamms back together & once they're done it's back into it.

Dont think I've missed anything so far fushing hasn't been to crash hot out wide so far, did get a good report of some mahi around 5 kg on a mates private fad so wont be long now

Nice fish and I think it is is ok for any angler to keep his first.

If fishos are to target these great fish - they put alot of time ,effort and money into doing it.

Much nicer to tag and release if catches of them become consistant by experienced anglers.

Would love to see the HOMMUS RECIPE HERE for everyone to try. emot108.gif

I dont think so bafoo !

In fact I'm totally against tagging fish BUT NOT RELEASING them

Prob wun of the 1st is Aust to get their Tagging masters back in the early 80's I was right into it

BUT years down the track I've changed my mind after seeing how data from tagged fish & other means is being used against recreational fisho's

I say Tell them Nut Ting, Give Them Nut Ting

Ewe dont need to jab a fish with a tag to release, Just let it go the way it was B4 ewe caught it.

Posted by: alex Feb 11 2010, 01:28 AM

Yeah jump i do know where your coming from on the T'N'R Of billfish especially where the long liners are concerned.

But in some respects T'N'R finding out about those billfish that cross the ocean esp blacks and blues that grow BIG have made people (both anglers and skippers) alot more aware
Of what they are taking from the fishery so jump i see the bad but there is also some good in what comes from T'N'R

But there again as Jullian Pepperal said to dad on the weight station that scientists do need dead specimens for research and D'N'A analysis. So there is many a pro and con for both.

But personally i dont like killing them but the old man owns the boat. !!

Used to run into him all the time many moons ago & allways informative chats

But like I said earlier these days that info is also used by idiot politicians etc etc against anglers

That's wot pee's me off & why i haven't tagged for years

Every now & then ewe also come across peeps @ ramps attempting to gather info & stats

TELL THEM NOTHING GIVE THEM NOTHING
