Posted by: Fed May 20 2012, 03:29 PM

I nearly forgot, you're behind the times mate, nowdays you build a shell & drive stringers up its arse with a sledge hammer.

BTW, I call bullshit on pressure testing to 150 PSI without a bomb containment unit to put it in.

I'm no engineer but I seriously doubt a 4mm square ally tank would survive 150 PSI without major deformation, maybe Pelagic meant 150 KPA.

Interesting to watch 2 plate threads at the same time.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Unfortunately, my post contains a typo. The fuel tank is pressure tested to 150kpa, which translates to approx 21.7psi.

Ahh that's better, no bullshit just a mistake.

Of coarse you know that thread was started as a deliberate attempt to take away any focus that may have been Jumpy's way. and to some how put a bit of shit on Jays thread.
I strongly believe Jumpy should have started an entire new thread with his build, not start his build 11 pages into a thread.
But what would I know.

Posted by: Fed May 21 2012, 12:00 AM

I didn't see it like that Frank but you could be right.
It will be interesting to see the different ways people do it.
One thing I'd like to know is the time frame around the Pelagic pictures.

Posted by: nimrod May 21 2012, 01:18 AM

Fed it is meant to depict Jay as 2nd rate, but I think it will turn around and bight Spiro on the arse.

Those pictures are from a factory made boat and has probably taken 3-4 weeks to get to that stage with god knows how many guys working on it, they do so much to one boat, then leave it sit for a while as they do a bit more to other boats and so forth, probably got 5-5 boats going at the one time at verious stages.

Frank i could have a ball in that thread if i wanted to but i'll let the groupies alone laugh.gif

Guy was talking shit in my thread reckoned he used a jig & i'll tell you now that is crock

Seen it done his way back when i built the jumpus whilst visiting predator boats & didn't like it one bit some of the gaps i saw is what got me thinking how to over come them & reason i built a proper jig

Posted by: nimrod May 21 2012, 11:10 PM

When you went to predator, was shortly after those guys took over the name and factory, that's where my T I G machine came from it was used to build the boats up till that stage.
When them guys took over from my mates they had 1/2 a boat built, which they finished and the one you seen would probably be the 1st maybe 2nd attempt they had of building a plate boat.
So don't judge the previously built Predators as being anything like the frame you seen, the old predators were a country shit house as solid as a rock.

Posted by: Jumpus GooDarus May 22 2012, 02:51 AM

I knew the original owner of predator from 30 years back frank

He used to work for Broadbill

A couple of questions Jumpy.

What's going on with the predator boat he doesn't seem to have welded the side sheets to the frames except for one, there's huge gaps in the rest?

Are you putting outriggers on your hull or stabi waterwings, surely it will fall over with a 34 degree deadrise.

Posted by: Jumpus GooDarus May 24 2012, 03:23 AM

wot you on about fed

Posted by: Fed May 24 2012, 05:44 AM

You said your deadrise was 24 then you changed it to 34 and at 34 it would fall over in the water without outriggers or waterwings.

How is it going, you have to be enjoying the cooler weather after the previous summer builds.

BTW the guy from Predator explained that if he welded the side sheets to the frames it causes distortion so they don't normally do it like that unless it's a survey boat so don't worry about my previous question.

MORE PICTURES PLEASE MATE.

Posted by: Jumpus GooDarus May 25 2012, 01:43 AM

Been coming home tired

Who's this predator guy you're on about ??

Posted by: Fed May 25 2012, 02:08 AM

The guy from predator boats.

Coming home tired is a good sign of plenty of work getting done.

After the last builds we're all expecting huge progress every day, you're getting too old and slowing down mate. Be careful you don't blow a valve .

How will you fit the tranny through that little hole?

I noticed in the big boat build you used 8 blocks on the inside of the transom to stop the skin pulling in, a question, why did you need the lower blocks as the bottom holes were well below the raised up section?
Did you have additional bracing inside the transom, I noticed there were some vertical grind marks on the outer skin at one point and thought they might have been a touch up from internal welding.
I wish you were building at home I'd come & visit, how about trying to arrange an open day at your mates workshop for an hour so that anyone who is interested can come & look.
A bit hard I know, the last thing your mate needs is strangers disrupting his work.

This thing is coming out micky mouse my best effort yet wasted last few days glass'n floatation hate the stuff very time consuming all done & some of it is in the hull

Floor starts tommoro had a bit of a nightmare sorting out the underfloor sprinkler system got tricky with all the under floor tube work

Hoping to flip it over next day or so & start on the trailer

Looks like it's getting powered by a yammy F150

Posted by: Fed Jun 5 2012, 12:57 PM

OK be a wanker, I thought you would use a wetbox for the tranny, I'm surprised it shoots through both the SIKAFLEX and the BIRDSHIT without losing too much power.

Oh yes, I did.

If you're using a proprietary sprinkler system be aware they clog up pretty easily & sometimes blow the fittings off.

I think I prefer the angular look for the raised foredeck like the big boat (did you see that) to the curved raised section you trimmed out for this one.
Knowing you it will look great though, I have no eye for that stuff anyway.

Carry on.......

Hi Jumpy

This new trailer system you are using might look convenient but I'd stick with the trailer system you used for your "old" boat.
It really slows you down, welding the trailer to the bottom of the boat.

take the slr next time you are out there.

A smaller version of the big boat Jumpy?
Do you drive standing up or sitting down, I'm about 50/50 but the older I get the more I find myself sitting down. I like to look over the screen when standing & though the screen when sitting and still have my feet on the floor when sitting.
I'm guessing you will still look through the screen when standing just like the big boat.
I'm a huge fan of hard tops but wind in your face on a hot day is hard to beat, make some air scoops for the front deck & pipe fresh air through to the wheelhouse or put a hatch in the roof that hinges at the back & you can crack open the front a few inches, instant air conditioning.
Looking good mate, hurry up.

Always wondered why alloy boat builders don't build the cabins to the outside of the gunwale ?
This would give a little more elbow room inside the cab.
And provide a nice little shelf either site of cab for sitting things on.
I know the controls and such would have to be adjusted but in my opinion the benefits would far outweigh any problems.

Personally i couldn't think of anything that would be more ugly & impractical as that

Ever been on a seafairy & tried walking to the bow ??

They have to rely on a hatch to access front bollard

Just about done under cabin snaped a pic late this arvo & as usual came out crap with flash going off reflecting off alloy

Owned a seafairy for 5 years and never had the need to walk to the bow, with a alloy boat a decent sized front door could be made, if the need to walk to the bow was there. But yes I can see the point that for those that want to walk along a shinny gunwail to get to the bow, it would be a problem.

Posted by: Fed Jul 18 2012, 06:17 PM

Where are the ashtrays going Jumpy?

I thought it would be a pain but it turned out being no trouble at all using the Seafarer trapdoor, you can stand up in it and it frees up both hands for doing the anchor stuff.

Some bastard welded a bit of scrap onto your cabin side mate, you better cut that ugly POS off quick smart.

Your last pic reminded me I need to find a new milk crate, lost the last one when I cleaned out the old factory.... short of mugging a milkman where the hell do you get a milk crate I wonder?

Jumpy. just 2 small critisims 1 and it';s not really vital cause it's a drive on, but the winch cradle/post in my mind could be about 3 inches higher, it appears to me that the winch cable would not be allinged properly with the winch hook of the boat and the last few turns of the winch ( the vital part ) you would be draging the boat nose down more then forward which would put strain on both winch and boat. ( quiet easily remedied by placing block under wince to lift it that 3 ".
The other small critism I would rather discuss eye to eye next time I see you cause it's pretty involved.

Posted by: Jumpus GooDarus Sep 8 2012, 02:21 AM

Built a few now frank & honestly cant find any merit in what you're saying
Boat is a drive on for starters i dont use the winch

Winch post hight was purposely lowered on this rig compared to the others

Logic told me it would drag nose down coupled by strap over arse of boat

That's the main reason I have never used photobucket or any of those other photo storage mobs.
Jumpy boat looks fantastic as all your boats always do.

That's all I have to say about that.

Fugly but if it works better then I guess it's OK, not keen on the name change either.

My honest opinion I preferred it with the white cabin, but the addition of the bow mount electric is nice.
Could have left the bow rail on and just modified it around the leckie.
Name is neither here nor there. I thought it was a nice touch in memory of your dad.
